I always thought the adjustable eyepiece for a scope was to clear up the reticle. On some of my newer scopes, I can look at a sign at 50 yards or so and clear up the image so it's perfect (as well as the reticle). Has this changed over the years or was it always this way? Thanks.

That's your eyes.  If your eyepiece is out of focus:
-focusing on the reticle, the target will be fuzzy
-focusing on the target, the reticle will be fuzzy

Sometimes it's hard to force your eyes to switch which one to focus on.

Adjusting the eyepiece allows you to bring the two into focus at the same time, and can vary greatly depending on the condition of your eyes.

Yep, I have had scopes where I could only bring into focus either the reticle or the target   and others where i could bring both into focus and some where I couldnt bring the reticle into focus at all.
