| Just mounted my new Vortex Strikefire II red dot on my Stag Arms AR-15. The right side of the mount I was able to screw down and secure fairly easy, getting the top ring and the mount to match up flush with no gap. The left side of the mount it would not match up flush and there is a gap remaining, despite how much I screw down taht side. This is my first time mounting an optic. Is this normal? The optic felt secure and was not loose, but I was afraid to keep cranking down the screws in fear of stripping the screws. Is this normal? Or am I being overly cautious and need to just crank the screws down more? I did not feel or hear anything to make me think I stripped the screws but thought I would ask for advice on the matter here. Also, whenever I clean the upper receiver, am I good to leave the red dot on or should I take it off every time? Thanks in advance for any advice/help on this issue. |
| The mount is designed to have the gap. Make the gap even on both sides, evenly screw the top of the mount while keeping the sight level. There is a torque spec to tighten the sight to, although I don't know if offhand. Believe me, it doesn't take a lot of torque to keep the sight in place. Once you have it zeroed, leave it on. if you are happy with it. If you want magnification, get a 3X magnifier with a swing away mount, or get a LaRue QD mount for each of the optics you will want to swap back and forth. Don't worry about removing it when cleaning, they are pretty durable. Have fun! |

Unscrew it. Start over. It needs to be done like lug nuts on a wheel. Corner x corner. Middle. Tighten it all up with a final pass. Don't crank down like a guerrilla either. I loosened it up and then retightened it. Have a small gap but its even on both sides. To the first responder above, I did do the corner X like a tires lug nuts, it just happened to be tigher on the right when I was done. Next question is whenever I do take it off of the top rail, how do I break the loctite bond? |
