I am setting up a new Nikon M-223. The focus seems to change a lot as I change magnification. In other words, if I zoom in on an object to power 16x and adjust the focus for a sharp image the image is completely out of focus when I zoom back out to 4x. Is this typical?

Are you using the side focus (parallax adjustment), or the eyepiece reticle focus? They serve different purposes. You probably already know that. Use the eyepiece focus to get a clear, sharp image of the reticle. Then leave it alone. The side focus is for parallax adjustment. Normally set it for 100 yards and only adjust it if up very close or at longer distance.
Try this, if you have not done so already. If you have both the eyepiece sharply focused on the RETICLE, not the target, and have your parallax set for the correct distance, then changing power ought not change focus. If it does, then the scope is defective and should be returned. I hope this helps. |

Another case of operator error. There is still a small change in focus with change of the zoom but not a real problem. R |

I'm still having some focus problems with this scope. It's fine at 100 yards and beyond. I was at the indoor rifle range the other day which is only 25 yards. The scope will not focus at that distance (using the side focus). Is that normal/acceptable? Am I expecting too much?

| I honestly don't know. Scopes in that power range usually do not have parallax (or side focus) down to 25 yards. Lower powered variables, like 2-7x and 3-9x do better. So do scopes designed for use on rimfire rifles where parallax is either fixed down at 50 yards rather than 100 or have variable parallax side focus or objective parallax that does go down to 25 yards. I can't say if there is a problem with that scope, but a high powered centerfire variable may have a problem at 25 yards regardless of who makes it. I have a 6-24x50 Burris target scope with side focus that will not focus much below about 75 yards. That is normal for that scope. On the other hand a 3-9x40mm Leupold intended for use on rimfire rifles has an adjustable objective lens for parallax correction and can focus down to about 10 feet on 3x and down to less than 25 yards on 9x. |
