Just got a new Aimpoint for my AR and I have a fixed front iron sight.  When I looked through my newly mounted optic there I see my iron sight front and center.  Now I'm obviously new and I've read some stuff about co-witness etc but I'm just learning.  My question is...would it be bad to remove the fixed front sight so that I have a clear view through my optic?  Is it a big deal to remove a fixed sight?

It's not a big deal at all. 95% of my rifles have flip up iron sights. I prefer an open field of view. Why spend the money on an optic, just to block part of it with iron sights?

I think a 1/3 co-witness is ideal even with fold-down irons.

focus on the target when shooting with your Red Dot.  Keep both eyes open; the fsb will practically ghost out.

Thank you all for that.  Very helpful.  So does 1/3 co-witness mean I'm seeing the front site in the bottom third of my optic?  And why would that be ideal?  What is the advantage?

Less stuff blocking your field of view. And for some people, having it that high makes a more comfortable cheek weld. Shoot with both eyes open and focus on the target though (like you should with a red dot), and the front sight won't be noticeable.
