I've got a leftovers build I'm doing, 14.5" barrel with carry handle iron sights. I'm putting a light on it and it'll be one of my dedicated home defense weapons.
I guess I'll just sight it in for 10-15 yards? It's not like it'll be in a situation where I'll need to shoot it much further than that. I'll be using 77 or 69 gr hpbt's. |

That's what he is asking. Where would it hit at 10 yards with your recommended zero?
One way to know without burning through ammo, is to get a cheap laser boresighter. Stick it in the bore, sight your iron sights to coincide with the laser dot at the CQB range you want. Then see where you are at 25 or 50 or 100, if needed. I sight in a red dot for 25 this way and can move the rifle around at shorter ranges inside a building while looking through the irons and can instantly see the trajectory variations caused by the height of that dot (absolute cowitness height) being above the bore. Its only a couple inches, so center body mass hits are not affected. |
| Sight the gun in with a 50 / 200 zero and you're in the kill zone anywhere from 0 to 300 yds. With that zero, you're going to be hitting approximately 1.5" below your point of aim at 10yds, which shouldn't make a whole lot of difference to the person on the receiving end. |

I zero everything at 100. It doesn't really matter as long as you know where its going to hit at a X distance. This. Purely because in my mind it's easier to remember that it will always shoot low. 0-200 yards will be a max of 2" low give or take. YMMV...in the end it's whatever works best for you http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1139532_.html http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?65679-AR-15-Zeros-and-Trajectories |

For what you're describing, you might want to look at the CSAT sight:
http://www.combatshootingandtactics.com/published/csat_combat_sight_instructions_08.pdf Paul Howe may or may not know a thing or two about CQB with iron sighted 14.5" carbines.
