| Currently running a Nikon P-300. I hate it. Esp in low light conditions or overcast days. Thinking of a leupold vx r or 6 in 50mm. Anyone have any other suggestions for a low light scope? Prefer a larger tube as well. 30mm vs 1in |

Look at Vortex or SWFA. how far do you plan on shooting? Distance is gonna be under 200 yds but I need to SEE. I'm going to suggest the SWFA 3-15x42 then take the savings and buy a set of quality rings. Iknow what your saying about eyesight I'm 26 as well and have been wearing prescription glasses since 15. I have a fixed SWFA scope and love it. so far I have taken it out to 1000 yards on my 300WM and have had no problems seeing what I hit. |

If you are looking for a tactical scope I would look at the Bushnell Elite Tac 3-12x44. If you are looking for a hunting scope I would go with a Swarovski Z3. The 3-10x42 is under a grand and maybe even the 4-12.
I have the SWFA SS 3-15x42 and its a very good scope but my bushnell might have a tad better glass. |

Quality glass is critical for low light performance, but exit pupil size is too. You need an exit pupil of not less than 5mm at the maximum magnification power you intend to use at dawn or dusk. That's why good low light optics have large objectives if power is high.
True objective diameter divided by power equals exit pupil. 50mm divided by 10 equals 5mm exit pupil. 40mm divided by 9 equals 4.4 (less than 5). You have to turn the power down a little on a 3-9x40 to get maximum brightness at dusk. Your eyes cannot use an exit pupil larger than 5 except in true darkness, so don't overdo it, though. To illustrate the point of how it does matter: Try a 14x scope with a 40mm objective at dusk. Even very good glass will be dim in that scope at 14x at dusk with only a 2.9mm exit pupil. |
