First let me start by saying I have researched this but just wanted some direct feedback on the matter.  My buddy owns a Colt Sporter Lightweight with a fixed carry handle that he would like to get an ACOG for.  I know lots of guys will say to switch the upper to a flat top but thats not going to be an option.  Anyway I am looking for some advice/opinions on what a good quality 4x32 ACOG would be for his set up.  Any opinions on which model, mount, reticle, etc would be very much appreciated.  Thanks for any feedback.

Aside from type of reticule, search in here for a work by Bartholamew (spelling off).  Some acogs are designed for the carry handle, some for the flattops, if you get the wrong one the drop chart will never work.

A lot of ACOGs come with mounts for the carry handle. Personally if I were mounting it on a carry handle I would use a 3X or aimpoint because having a full size ACOG mounted on the carry would be very cumbersome.

If he is stuck on a 4x32, the TA31 or TA31D will mount to a handle right out of the box, both are BAC models. I prefer the Donut of death reticle (TA31), the D model is the Triangle.

Personally, I've tried a handle mounted 4x32 ACOG and it kind of sucks. I would suggest one of the TA33 models for handle mounting; much better eye relief. He might need to purchase a separate mounting screw to install one on the handle though. But otherwise, almost all ACOG models can be handle mounted.

I have the TA31RCO M4CP and love it, but it is on my MT6700 flat top. Personally I don't like using a optic on top of a carry handle, but that is me. I prefer my optics as close to the barrel as possible. As for reticle, color and model of optic these are all personal choices, so what works for me might be totally wrong for him. He needs to try and many as he can even if it is just looking through it in the store. When I did my research a few years back the  TA31 was the most popular ACOG, but that may be different now. But as I said he needs to find out what works best for him, no short cuts if you want to buy once and cry once.

Thx for the feedback. I agree that its not ideal but its his rig and he has his heart set on a ACOG. Any other opinions is much appreciated.

All right so I shared the advice you fine knowledgeable people gave and what else I had read.  My friend however decided he liked the TA31TRD model style the best with the red dot that was on EE here.  Anyway as I am still very unfamiliar with ACOGs as I've only ever had eotechs on my rifles I am still somewhat confused.  I don't believe that the mount that comes with it will work on his carry handle or will it?  If not what mount should I be looking to get him, and any suggestions on where for a fair price?  Thanks again for any help/advice

I have had a 4x32 ACOG mounted on a fixed handle rifle for at least 8 or 9 years. I do not find it too heavy or bulky. It works great.
I think it one of the best optics for a fixed handle AR.

And a Flat Top ar as well.
