I never see anyone comment or question a Zeiss Conquest.  I don't have any super grade optics, but I have a 4.5-14 x 50, target turret, side focus, mildot Zeiss Conquest on a bolt gun and it is by far the best scope that I have.  It has a 1 inch tube, and originally cost about $775 a few years ago.  It is the most expensive rifle scope that I own.  The glass is exceptional compared to the others I have, and I buy mostly mid range optics.

As much as some of you spend on rifle scopes, why is this one never mentioned?

Is it overlooked or do you not like it?

I have several Zeiss scopes, love them.  When I bought my first one I was initially going to get a Leupold Mark4 but the Zeiss had a noticeably better image quality and came at a better price.

I had a 6.5-20 and is was much much better than my Leoupd 6.5-20 VarixIII.

Much better.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 MC w/ Z600 reticle.

My only complaint is that the reticle is in the second focal plane. A BDC reticle should ALWAYS be in the first focal plane. Using the Zeiss ballistic software shows at which magnification a particular load with most closely correspond with the reticle.

I didn't buy a variable power scope just to use it at one power. Example: The trajectory of M193 is closest at 3x.
Adjusting the magnification to 9x, the reticle is good for <390yds.

I have one of those as well, got it when one of the big online shops (Cabela's) had them WAYYYY discounted and have been very happy with it.

Echo _5....If I have this right, 1st focal plane you can use the BDC on any power and 2nd focal plane you have to use it on the highest power.  Correct?  Mine is on a bolt gun and when I use the BDC, I can't think of a time it wouldn't be on the highest power for the longest shot.

Living in AZ, I do not get any heat waves/distortion on 14X on the hottest days.  Anything above 14X on my other scopes and I see the heat waves.  I think it has more to do with the heat and X, than the glass.  The better the glass the more heat waves you will see.  Do you agree with that?

But I do understand what you are saying.  You buy a variable scope to use different magnification, so you want that reticle to work all the time at any setting.

The glass on my $500 or so scopes don't even compare to the Zeiss.

Anyway, I never see any one discuss the Zeiss for long range shooting on this forum.

Thanks for your feedback.

Meh.

No FFP option, mismatched turrets and reticles, no gen2 style mil based reticle available. For my money their are a lot better options out there.

livinfree, what I mean is that the BDC reticle is the same size across all magnifications.
Therefore, it will not correspond to actual bullet drop at all magnifications.
Using the Zeiss ballistic calculator software will show at which power a particular load corresponds to the reticle.

Using M193 ammo, (common through an AR), the BDC reticle is accurate at the lowest magnification.
For a long range shot where you'd want to use the highest magnification, the reticle is only good for @380yds. Even then, the BDC reticle numbers don't jibe with actual range.

To take a long range shot using m193 through an AR with a Zeiss z600 reticle, you have to use the scope at 3x.
Wouldn't you want to use your scope at the highest magnification possible for a long range shot?

Rfutch, Zeiss does offer a FFP scope.
I forget the model number though.

The Zeiss Conquest scopes are a great value for the money IMHO.

I also have a 4.5 to 14x. I put it on my accurte 22LR sporter rifle so i would have a quality scope that I cpuld focus the paralax down to close ranges, and also have enough power, and good enough glass to shoot at the heads of turtles 100 yards away on my pond, as well as normal 22LR shootng and hunting. It has performed perfectly.

Yes they do. But we are are in a whole new ball park when it comes to features vs. price. lol

According to the instructions that came with my Zeiss scope, the 3-12x56 Conquest has a FFP reticle.

Echo 5.. I've been reading and I am sure I understand the 1st and 2nd FP now.  I will have to actually shoot and think about it to understand it fully.

I have always understood the deal with turrets and reticles not matching up but have never had a problem making it work, but I have only shot out to 300 yards.

Thanks to you and Futch for the info.

Scored a new 4.5-14 Conquest for cheap a few years back. Had it on a .308 700 and it performed wonderfully. Never a hint of trouble. Bright, clear, consistent, solid.
