What height mount for an A2 fixed carry handle upper to place the optic in front of the handle to get clearance?

Depends on which optic you are talking about.
If no eye relief worries just use a goose-neck mount which mounts to the hole in the carry handle goes forward and drops down to hold optic in front of the carry handle.
You could just replace the upper receiver.

It would be a Micro or Reflex style RDS, gun has a quad rail, upper replacement not an option.

Why is replacing the upper not an option? I like A2's myself but stick with irons.
