I'm considering buying a red dot for a dedicated 22lr. It's a CMMG AR15 chambered in 22lr. It's basically a toy that sees more rounds through it than any other gun I own. We use it for just about everything including hunting, plinking, steel plates, and target shooting out to 100 yards.  The kids and I both love it. I've been toying with the idea of installing a Vortex Strikefire on it since I've seen some good reviews on it here. One thing I like is that it comes with a screw-in 2x magnifer (my eyes aren't as good as they used to be) and a mount. But I've been reading some good reviews here on the Primary Arms red dots. I know, everyone here loves Aimpoints and Eotechs but I can't justify spending that kind of money on a "toy" so please don't advise me to buy one. Are there any other "budget" optics I should consider? I've pretty much narrowed it down to Vortex and Primary Arms as they appear to be the only "budget" optics worth considering.

Primary Arms, with a good mount. PA also makes an excellent $100 3X magnifier that you could add as your budget allows. Now, move on to the next piece of kit you would like to upgrade!

Which Primary Arms red dot would be the best match for an AR15? I just started looking at them. Also, what would be a decent mount if I decide to go with PA?

This one (Skip the multi-reticle models as that is just one more thing that could possibly break):

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_GEN_2_AA_Battery_Red_Dot_p/pam4g2.htm

and this one:

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_Micro_Dot_With_Removable_Base_p/md-06.htm

Many prefer the micro due to its smaller size a lighter weight. If you choose the micro, get the one with the removable base. This will allow you to ad a high quality mount of your choosing.

Also, keep an eye on EE as many people who run these end up selling them when they decide to go for the higher end optics. I see micros pop up about once a week.

Here is the mount you want for the micro:

https://www.primaryarms.com/Seekins_Precision_Optic_Mount_for_Primary_Arms_MIc_p/spt1pasocom.htm

It provides lower 1/3 co-witness and is made by a reputable manufacturer. NOTE: The Larue LT660 does not work with the PA micro.

I have two Vortex Strikefires, two PA Micros, and one Vortex SPARC.  I had a problem with the SPARC at first, but Vortex replaced it and all is good now.  I really like the 2MOA dot and NV option.  If you get the PA Micro, be sure you get the right height mount to co-register with your BUIS.  They offered two heights when I got mine and I ended up with the lower-third coregister height.  Not good.  The emiter gets in the way.  The Strikefires are really nice and rugged.

All things considered, I'd go with the PA Micro just because of cost and weight.

300 BLK pistol with PA Micro and lower-third coregister mount:

Both are good choices. I have a Bushnell TR-25, SPARC, and a Strikefire. I had a Primary Arms M3 clone but sold it. I like the Strikefire's push button better, as I had the PA turn on by accident and kill the batteries. You can find a Strikefire for $130-140 if you look around. I also like the screw in magnifier thats included with the Strikefire. It resides on my CMMG 22lr AR as well.

Either way, great budget optics.

I can't comment on the PA but I have a Strikefire on my HK MP5 SD .22 and I love it.  The screw in magnifier makes a big difference especially when you're talking tiny holes in targets way out there.  My HK MP5 with the Strikefire is such a great combo I think I might try it for squirrel hunting lol.

I really like the fact that the Vortex Strikefire comes with a 2x magnifier. I currently have a Nikon 3x P223 scope on the AR and really like it. We do a good deal of shooting at 100 yards and I like a little magnification. With the Primary Arms red dots, I'd have a buy a seperate magnifier. I see PA even has a 6x magnifier, but that may be too much.

how is this even a question?  No disrespect to Marshal and PA but Vortex has a lifetime warranty.  The discussion begins and ends there.  There are plenty of reviews on people abusing their strikefires and sparcs to see how they hold up.  They are not aimpoint or eotech but the next best option

After going back and forth, I just ordered a Vortex Strikefire from Primary Arms. Sounds like I couldn't go wrong with either one.

LOL   I've never ordered from Primary Arms, but they are a sponsor here and seem to get great reviews. Plus I was really impressed with the options/packages available on their site.
