Question about the reticle on a NF 1-4x24. Which would you prefer? They offer the NP-1, which is just basically illuminated fine crosshairs. The FC-2 which is illuminated circle dot. And mil-dot, which is obviously illuminated cross hairs with mil dots.

I really like the FC-2. Seems simple and uncluttered and quick to get on target. I will be using this primarily for hunting hogs with shots from about 30 - 150ish yards. I think the circle dot will be great for closer ranges, but wondering if it is precise enough for ear hole shots at 150+ yds? Also at the range, will the circle dot be precise enough to hit bullseyes out past 100 yds? Say you are on the 200yd range, I just dont know if at 4 power will the dot completely cover the bulls eye? Or is the dot small enough and precise enough at 200yds?

For right now I wont be shooting anything paper or live any over 200 yds. Im thinking the FC-2 would be great. Just looking for input from people who own or have used this scope, or anyone familiar with it. I dont want to choose the wrong reticle. Thanks in advance for any replies.

The FC-2 reticle is a great choice for general, fast shooting at close to moderate distances, but it is not a target reticle.  If you're considering bullseye work, get something else.

mousegunner is pretty much spot on.  the fc-2 reticle would be great for hog hunting but it's no target reticle.

I have the NP-1 on a 2.5-10x32. As you indicated the crosshair is very fine. I like it for precise aiming at targets, steel, etc. It's also a great hunting reticule within modest ranges. I've killed deer, antelope and coyotes with it and never had a problem getting the X-hairs on them even when things were happening fast. There are no windage holds or much on the way of ranging capabilities.
For what you're describing I think the FC-2 would be a better bet. On the 1-4 the center dot on the FC-2 is 2MOA so at 150 yards you will have a ~3” aiming point.

What about getting the Mil-Dot reticle?

The mildot is very nice when it is illuminated.
Non illuminated it sucks, if you plan on using it for anything but bench shooting.

Non illuminated the cross hairs are to fine.

NF would dominate if they would upgrade to a day time illumination.

+100.

I'm stunned they haven't gotten the message yet.

Good information everyone. So is the reticle not daytime visible? Its not really a big requirement of mine, just wondering.

Would there be any advantage or disadvantage going with the NP-1? Basically the NP-1 will give me a finer aiming point when compared to the FC-2 reticle at longer ranges, right?

Most of my shots will be from 50 - 125 yds on the pigs. Sometimes I may have a closer shot, and sometimes longer, but for the most part lets say 50 - 125 ish. I was still hoping the FC-2 would be ok for hitting the range once a year and accurately punching paper....at least on the 100 yd range.

I dont see myself needing to take a shot over 200 yds, but would still like to be able to make a kill shot AT 200 if needed. Is the FC-2 capable of this?

Thanks again.

I wish Nightforce would have a close quarter reticle that was more user friendly at distance.  With that said I will take a Nightforce optic over a Leupold as I own one Nightforce and several Leupy's.  Not that there is anything wrong with Leupy.  But Nightforce could take a page out of 1-5 reticles from the Leupold book.  Here is the Leupold Mark IV 1.5-5 which also illuminates.  As you can see I have a crosshair but the circle makes for a nice "quick target" acquisition for close quarter shots.

The reasonably large center dot of the FC-2 makes quick shots easier than with a fine crosshairs reticle, but harder for more precision.  Of course, a bright daylight visible small dot would work fine for both, but Nightforce hasn't gotten the message yet.

For a possible solution for both needs, take a look at the Zeiss Conquest Duralyt 1.2-5x36 scope.  It has a fine illuminated dot plus crosshairs.  For quick shots, turn up the dot to the brightest setting and it's daylight visible; for accuracy, just turn it down a few clicks for better definition.

That Zeiss looks nice, however from day one when i started all this I said I want a small, light, low power scope on my AR. I do not want a full sized scope. I have bolt guns with full sized scopes and do not want that on my AR.

Im pretty sure the NF with FC-2 will be sufficient for my needs. Just want to make sure it can effectively make kill shots on hogs out to 200 max range. This is a pretty major purchase for me and I want to do it right the first time. Im just asking a bunch of people a bunch of questions to hopefully help me make the right choice.

Thanks again for yall's comments.

FWIW, the Zeiss is only 1 ounce heavier than the Nightforce, 18 versus 17 ounces.

The FC2 will easily enable you to make kill shots at 200 yards....if you do your part. Just don't expect to pick the specific hair you will hit.  The reticle is much too course for that.  If in Houston area and ever get out to the monthly 3-gun match at The Impact Zone, you are welcome to shoot a match running my 16in Noveske with the NF 1-4x and FC2 reticle.
