| Total novice here, just purchased Colt Ar15 with Magpul hardware looking for recommendations for optics? Seen Eotech and Aimpoint on here...not really sure where to go from here...all responses appreciated. |

If you're staying with any qualty Red Dot type scope, you can't ask for much better than what you're looking at. I don't own either one, but those who do, have good reviews. Aimpoint does have MUCH longer lasting battery life over the EOTech if that means anything to you.
If, however you want/looking for other good/cheaper choices, there's Burris Fastfire, Vortex Strikefire, Vortex Sparc, Bushnell TRS-25, Bushnell TRS-32 just to name a few. I have the Bushnell TRS-32 and it's done me really good, and made quite robust, but it's new and not much out there about it, so mine is still in the trial period of usage for me as to reliability and testing battery(cr2032) usage, but so far it's a winner, for a measley $129. Mueller Scopes also puts out a Red Dot scope, and Bushnell has a Reflex sight out, but don't know anything about it or how good. Del |

Since this is your first optic, the question you need to ask yourself is if you want magnification. At this stage I'd take the classic Arfcom route and get both. I'd start with a Red dot and ad a flip-to side magnifier. I prefer the Eotech for everything. The one MOA dot is more precise and you will never struggle to find the dot when employing a strange shooting position. I have had to do barricade shooting drills in total darkness ( was, not the target) and could not find my reticule when shooting an Aimpoint without a cheek weld.
Also, the Eotech reticule can be used for range estimation, and some versions have Bullet drop compensators. This is very useful with a magnifier. I also have a Trijicon Reflex, but do not use a mag with it. |
| Thanks for the replies! You guys are definitely more informed than I; I believe I need magnification which neither of these products do correct? Should I just go get a 3-9 x 40 scope?? Not really clear on what a product from Eotech does compared to the aforementioned scope....thanks for your patience and knowledge! |

eotech are not a magnified scope. They are a holographic red dot. They are for CQBD close quarter fighting. You can keep both eyes open. Once sighted in it does not matter where your head is in relation to the scope the red dot is where the bullet will hit. With typical 3x mag they are good out to at least 100 yards most of the magnifier are on a flip mount so CQBD they flip out then flip down for a distant shot. Eotech are water proof to I think 9 feet and are a substantial piece of equipment with an expensive price. The battery life is shorter then an aimpoint only a 1000 hours of continuous on A 3 x 9 variable scope will reach further but not shorter it is not a CQBD scope requires you to put one eye to the center of the scope and depending on the price may not be as robust as an eotech they are reaaly tools for different things. Most people will tell you to get used to irons first btw an eotech and magnifier is roughly a 1000 dollars you can buy a nice inexpesive 3 x9 for a lot less think vortex diamondback |

thanks for the help! On your AR I see the Eotech piece is that a magnified scope behind it? How does that work then, you mentioned one flipping out of the way? No scope, just a magnifier. So the Eotech is his sight, with no magnification and the magnifier behind it supplies magnification when wanted. The magnifier is also on a flip to side mount, so it actually slides out of the way to the side when he wants the 1x magnification. |
