I've seen several threads where guys have a1/a2 rifles, with a rail on the front, and their red dot of choice mounted on it. Has anybody done this?  Is it still accurate/effective?  I like the look of it, just am not sure of the practicality of it.  Any advice guys?  Thanks, L2

edit: I'm not talking about a gooseneck mount, I mean on the handguard.

On a handguard that could shift a little like a RAS or a RIS it isn't a great idea, but some still do it. A solid free float handguard would be no problem though. The negatives would be that the weight is shifted forward some and your field of view through the sight will be smaller. The positives would be that the irons kind of protect the sight from bumps and your field of view around the sight will be larger. If you like having your irons up all of the time, then go ahead and do it.
