I've decided to put a scope on one of my ARs - primarily for predator hunting.  I don't know much about them since I use EOTechs and Aimpoints on my other rifles.  I'm looking at a 3-9x40 scope, matte finish, 30mm or 1 inch tube size.  It must be reliable and durable, but inexpensive.  I don't want to put too much money into this setup because I'm such a novice, it wouldn't be practical.  So far I've been looking hard at a Nikon Pro-Staff BDC.  Any tips or recommendations?

TIA

I have a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x50 on my 7mm Mag rifle and I love it.  For the money, you just can't beat the Nikons.  Mate the scope with a one-piece mount and you'll be set.  I have a Rock River mount on my AR and I believe it was about $60.

I currently have a Leupold 3x9 x40 AR Tactical with BDC and mil dot, super clear glass, lifetime warranty- standard cross hairs with BDC is 299, Mil-dot I think I pain like 330. I used a Nikon 223 20 Moa base, not sure If the 20 moa base was a good decision yet, but you will want a one piece mount, I heard the Larue mounts are of good quality too, my 20 moa Nikon base was 100, but I had gift cards so it was basically free. BDC works very nice for the intended 55gr round, zeroed quickly on my rifle and I purchased it for plinking / coyotes. My local sporting goods store carried both (Scheels, Fargo ND) for the same price that I found them on CheaperthanDirt or Midway.  I also added BCM's #5 charging handle to ease charging with the scope on my rifle.

Thanks fellas!  I'm really leaning toward the Pro-Staff.  Leupolds are top tier from what I've read and heard, but not really what I want to pay at this time.  I had a Trijicon Accupoint many years ago.  Never even used it.  I was convinced that a scope was not the ideal optic for an AR, sold I foolishly sold it.  Wish I still had it!

Weaver Grand Slam Tactical. Check reviews here, at the Snipers Hide, etc.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/598484/weaver-tactical-grand-slam-rifle-scope-3-10x-40mm-1-10-mil-adjustments-mil-dot-reticle-matte

On sale right now at $299, with free shipping. I believe the sale ends tonight, then it's back to $399.

It seems to be about the best bang for the buck currently available in a scope of this type. I couldn't find any negative about it.

Probably the best deal in optics today IMO.  I own 2 of them and they are well worth it.

I have a very hard time buying gun accessories on eBay.  It seems the market is completely flooded with Chinese counterfeit parts, and many of the counterfeit parts are good.  If you're comfortable with your ability to tell the difference, great.  Just a heads up for those less-knowledgeable (like myself), before they run off to eBay as well.

the weaver 3x10x40 tactical goes on sale quite frequently for 299.00 and it is very hard to beat for the money . I have had mine mounted on a 5.56 , 308 and 458 socom and it is tough as nails , clear glass and repeatable turrets.
if I were you I would save some cash and buy one of these scopes and have no regrets. I can also vouch for the rock river scope mount 60.00 and made in america built like a tank.
this is the scopes current home on my rock river 308

Redfield scopes, made by Leupold in the USA. In your price range, excellent quality. Redfield Revolution scopes are made in the USA, the Revenge line are not. I have one on an AR, and everyone that shoots it asks about the scope, they like it.
