95% of my shooting with my new LE 6920 (Magpul) will be within 100 yards. (The outdoor range I frequent only goes to 100 yards.) This is primary a defensive rifle I hope to never need for that purpose. Most of its use will be range practicing or the occasional short range deer hunt.
Although I don't have great eyesight, I don't need a 1-4X scope do I? Can I get by with a Aimpoint or Eotech? I had looked at and almost decided on the Burris MTAC 1-4X but I really want a red dot because I like the parallax free aspect as well as the quick acquisition. Plus, I like the smaller size/weight of red dots and the way they look on the rifle. So wil I really regret not getting a variable optic with the illuminated reticle like the Burris or do you think I will be happy with the red dot? By the way, my idea of fun at the range would be shooting at paint can lids at variable distances, not trying to punch a 3" grouping at 100 yards on a bench rest setup. Thanks in advance. |
| Sounds like a red dot of some sort is tailor made for your application. I like EoTech, but it comes down to personal preference. They're fast and easy, as long as extreme precision is not required, at 100yds you can still shoot 1-2MOA groups, its just not as easy as a variable. Several other decent options to EoTech and Aimpoint out there as well. |
| Consider the Vortex Strikefire. It's a decent red dot without the high price. |

This means this is the best choice. IE: an Aimpoint PRO. $400 new from a dealer, as low as $350 on the EE. A defensive rifle should always be on, thus an Aimpoint over the Eotech. The Aimpoint measures battery life in years, whereas the Eotech is measured in hundreds of hours and has an auto-shutoff meaning you need to turn it on before using, a luxury one may not have in a defensive use. |

Aimpoint PRO or Eotech XPS 2.0. I have both and love them So there was a vote for both earlier. I prefer the sight picture, reticle, and length of the Eotech but it IS slightly hazy due to my astigmatism. However, the Aimpoint Pro would be a little cheaper, has a great rep for durability, has the long battery life, BUT it is a lot longer on the rifle (especially considering I don't have a quad rail upper but the Magpul). So, remember, I am a newbie and not trying to get a debate started here. Which one should I go with?? |
