| Sorry if this is too n00bish a question, but what are the typical magification levels most people use for target shooting at 50 yd, 100 yd, and 200 yd? |
|
I hit small plates at 200 yards with a 3.5x ACOG. If I can do it then I know anyone can.
a 3-9x variable power optic would easily get you there. Higher magnification would be nice, but like Seastate said, watch what the low end of the scope's magnification is. You don't want the low end to be too high if you're hunting & such. |

Range doesnt factor in much for target shooting optics.. Unless youre relying on your scope as a spotting scope to see the bullet holes as well. In that case it matters a lot (along with optical quality).
But... I like 12x for load development, but 9x is great. That said, more magnification doesnt always help, and if youre vision is sharp, and a good set of match irons or an unmagnified red dot is enough to shoot 1moa groups. 4x will usually show most people you a big enough sight picture to shoot tiny group, but its harder to see the holes at 100y. |

I used to have a DMS 1-4x and a 3-9 FM POS scope. Looking at the machine shed door from 100 or so yards I had to turn the 3-9 scope up to 7 to see the same detail through the DMS on 4. Although I never compared them side by side like that with my buddies ACOG I could see the 3.5 showing the detail of the FM on 9. May want to use the J reticule. I find the dot in horseshoe or donut too cluttered for my astigmatism if it is bright. DMS was nice to hit mansize target at 300 fast but not great for precision IMHO. |
