| I've built an SPR type rifle that I absolutely love. I am currently using it for varmint/target shooting and using a 4-12X Vortex scope but i'd like to put a back up sight system on it for SHTF use. I've been considering a lot of different options. My main considerations are the Magpul BUIS flip up sights for around $100 (give or take), the dueck defense RTS set for around $230 or adding an aimpoint at an angle off the side of the firearm. I've been leaning toward the Dueck Defense RTS but I'm not sure how I like two metal objects sticking out of the side of my rifle. Also, I have almost ZERO experience with military sighting system. The Dueck sights use this and that seems to be why people love them, would it be hard to pick up? Anyways, my question is if anyone has any advice or recommendations,,, If you've had experience with any of these systems please share your thoughts. If you recommend something elsa please also share. |

I meant the A2 system. I guess its pretty much a point and shoot thing, but all the reviews I read about it are written by ex military who rave about the sights. Thanks In the context of backup sights, don't worry about it at all. Just use it that same as any aperture/post setup and drive on. A2 sights were designed when irons weren't just backups. The rear sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation, in addition to the elevation adjustable front sight post. When zeroing, you set the rear elevation drum to the 8/3 (6/3 on a carry handle and, I imagine, the Dueck sights) and make your elevation adjustments with the front sight post. You could then dial in your range changes using the elevation drum on the rear sight. (The BDC functions of the rear sight, though, are based on the specific fixed sight radius of the rifle for which they were designed.) |

I found this article quite illuminating with regard to the durability of three popular folding rear sights. Results are not what you might expect:
http://kitup.military.com/2012/07/back-up-iron-sight-drop-test.html My advice is to use the Magpuls, and stick the optic in a QD mount. If your scope is damaged, take it off and deploy the sights. The offset backup sights are popular with some three gun competitors because they're faster than taking off a mount all the time, but on a working gun, they're asking to snag on shit. |

I've recently picked up several of the KAC micro rear sights on eBay for $60 or less shipped.
Fantastic design, low profile when folded, elevation adjustable. Still, hard to beat a free Troy BUIS. Hell, hard to beat a Troy BUIS that you have to pay for. As for front sights, for the money, it's hard to fault the Magpul front MBUS. Joe |
