I've recently purchased my first AR and I'm know looking for a good scope in the $800 or less range. I really love the ACOG but the cost clearly keeps me away from that gem. I've researched several scopes and the Burris XTR 1x4 scope has caught my eye. I'm looking for a well rounded scope with good glass, and this model seems to fit that need (variable magnification for close and distant shooting and illuminated reticle). Any owners of this scope that could provide me with some feed back or any recommendation on another scope. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

They work well.

Never had mine do anything but hold zero.

3 years in now. 1000 + rounds of .223

I have been using a XTR 1-4 in 3 gun for over a year now and I have no complaints other that the reticle not being daylight visible. Once my new Leupold MK6 1-6 arrives in a few weeks it will go on my back up rifle. They make good stuff so buy with confidence.

Darn ...too many options out there. I just found a Trijicon accu-point 1X4 for a couple of $$ more. Love the fiber optics option and it's a trijicon! Will do a bit more research on this scope.

the Trijicon doesn't have any holdover marks so long range targets can be a challenge. I tried one but it wasn't my cup of tea. You will like the Burris. You might also look at the  Leupold VX 6 1-6 as well.

Good scope, the gen2 reticle works very well and I don't ever use illumination during the day (not saying it wouldn't be better to have it, I just need it for low light though).  I got mine on the EE excellent condition for $450 so I'm a lot happier with it than if I had paid $700.  If the SWFA 1-6x24 ever comes in I'll have something to compare it to.  I already made room for the SWFA by taking the XTR14 off my 18" AR and putting it on the FAL so I'll see how the holdovers work for 7.62x51.

Now this is just my .02 but.....

Last night I went to the local Cabelas and while there I was able to compare the

Trijicon 1-4 ~ 699.00

Burris Tac 30 1-4 (I wasn't able to look at the xtr but have in the past) ~ 299.00

Leupold 1.25-4 VR-X Zombie scope ~ 500-599 (don't remember)

I was blown away after mounting them in their Rifle Scope Stock (just a standard rifle stock with rings mounted on it)

Thoughts (These are just my observations inside the store with MY eyes so YMMV)

Burris 1-4 was by far the best bang for the buck hands down.  It was not only the best bang for the buck but using the 1.25x vs 1x was so much easier for me on 1x that after looking at it I wouldn't consider the 1.25 leupold for ME any more.  I would be better off with a 2-7 or 1.5-X if I didn't go with the 1x.

Now comparing the Burris to the Trijicon was a little harder.  The trijicon "seemed" to have the clearer glass which is to be expected at more than double the price although inside the store it is hard to tell by how much.  The Trijicon also had a more precise aiming point (German #4) as well as not relying on batteries.  The fit/finish seemed better (totally subjective) to me on the Trijicon as well as the size/weight seem less on the Triijicon.  Eyebox at 1x on the Burris and Trijicon seemed about the same in those conditions (would like to test them in field positions as well as hunting to truly see).

Now the good about the Burris.  First off the reticle for me was way faster up close than the German #4 on the Tijicon,  Illumination was better inside but I know in true daylight the Trijicon will trump the Burris.  If the Burris had a smaller center dot (i.e. 1 MOA) and thinner cross hairs as well as getting rid of the the top "T" part of the cross hair it would have been perfect but for the price it's very good. Also while the Burris isn't as clear as the Trijicon or Leupold the difference was so slight (indoors mind you) that I was kind of depressed with the better scopes and kept thinking what a great deal the Tac30 was.

In summary if I were you I would either get the Burris Tac30 as a best bang for your buck 1-4 scope under $400.00 or look to stepping up to other scopes that are better than the Trijicon or XTR because the price difference might be little and the performance gain would be significant (examples based on internet hersay and reviews would be Meopta ZD 1-4, SWFA SS 1-4 or 1-6, The newer and shorter IOR pitbull 1-4, Used Vortext Razor 1-4, or USO 1-4).

I hope this helps but as alway YMMV

^^ Nice review!  I can also say that my Burris Tac30 is a nice optic, very clear.  Mounts great with my LT-104.

I looked a Trijicon Accupoints, Leupold VX-R and Burris XTR. For me Trijicon had the best glass, Leupold second and Burris third. I had originally decided to go with Trijicon but went with Leupold for the price point. I just took delivery on a 1.25X20, and 3x9 VX-R and am very happy with my decision.
