Just looking to confirm my understanding on the difference between the standard TA31F and the RCOM4.  If I'm not mistaken, the only difference is that the RCO has horizontal stadia in the reticle, killflash and tethered caps.  Can someone confirm, and if possible comment on the value (or lack thereof) of the horizontal stadia?  I'm not sure when any of us might need such a thing, but it doesn't hurt to ask the question.

Thanks in advance!

The horizontal stadias are actually MIL marks, for calling for fire, and such. Really helps the Forward Observers and such.

I wanna say the distance between each horizontal stadia is 5 mils if I remember correctly from the TM for the optic.

The only difference between the TA31F and the RCO is indeed the addition of tethered caps, killFlash, etc.

Which, for civvies such as me, is absolutely meaningless if I'm not mistaken, correct?  I mean, what other possible use are horizontal stadia?

You MIGHT be able to use them as wind hold-overs, but I'm not sure what exactly that would entail doing. Might need ballistics software for that.

That would be one helluva breeze if you were using the horizontal stadia for windage.

If I'm not mistaken, the TA31F has adjustments in 0.250 MOA, whereas the RCO adjustments are in 0.100 mil increments.

TA31F and Marine RCOs are in 1/3 MOAs the Army M150 RCO is in 1/2 and the SDOs are .1 Mils

Thanks for the feedback, fellas.  I have an RCOM4 inbound.  All zombies, beware.

Quick question. I am also purchasing an ACOG. The RCO sights were supposedly for 14.5 inch and 20 inch barrels respectively. Will the RCO sights be off on a 16inch barrel? Also if I have to go with a TA31 would anyone recommend the green horseshoe reticle?

Refer to the BDC above.  The subtle variances in vertical stadia show how the difference in barrel lengths affect POA.  If my understanding is correct, the center (black) stadia are for a 16" barrel; the M4 stadia at right (purple) is for 14.5/7 and the A4 stadia (green) is for a 20" barrel, so you can see that while there is a difference, it's not much.   I'm curious about the horseshoe reticle myself, but there didn't seem to be a lot of feedback on the pros/cons of it, so I went with the chevron.

Here is the TA-31RCO manual:

To adjust deviation, multiply OT factor by the number mils distance between the target and where the artillery round splashed.  This will give you the adjustment in meters.

OT factor = distance in meters from Observer to Target (OT) divided by 1000m

It is 10 mils from the point of the red chevron to the first hash mark to either side, then 5 mils between each horizontal hash mark.
