[ARCHIVED THREAD] - optics

2/8/2012 2:18:59 PM EDT
Ok, so my second post and I wanted to break this up as it is a different topic from my other question. My rifle specs, Carbine length gas system, 16" barrell, 1/9, flat top.

I want to put optics but am rather torn between what to do. I am on a budget, and really have no need for a eotech or anything of that sort. I mainly am just going to use this particular rifle for "plinking" and if ever needed, as a back up in defense. The farthest I shoot normally is between 50-300 yards depending, both off hand and bench depending where i am at . But I want to put optics on it of some sort. Given the system set up, would I be better off just throwing a cheap red dot on it or would actually scoping it do me better. I have red dots on most of my other rifles less my hunting ones, and out to 100 yards, they do "o.k." for hitting in the general area of the target with a 2 moa dot. Ive looked at various optics and red dots, BUT i dont want to spend a fortune on optics for a plicking rifle. I am not going to compete, and If i hunt, It will be with a different upper and longer barrel. So that being said... Ive eyed 1-4x20, fixed 3x, 3-9 x whatever... As a defense rifle, which this would be as a back up to a shotgun for in house, would a 3x or greater hinder target visualization or make it that much more difficult versus say a red dot or 1-4? What are some opinions ?

All I really want I guess it something more or less all around. I want to be able to shoot up close, or out to  a reasonable distance accurately. I have flip up buis on there also that I am using for now. I can do fairly well with them, but... I'd just "prefer" something else.

A rough price range would help ensure you get suggestions that will be to your greatest benefit.  From reading your post, it sounds like you're torn between "needs" and "wants."  I like 1-4 scopes and think they offer great adaptability.

I would suggest you look here and here.

Don't go cheap on optics.  Save up and shoot your irons.  As for a red dot, there are normally some great deals on the equipment exchange for Aimpoint ML2's and ML3's ($300 ish).  If you go red dot, they're the best game in town.

If you're wanting magnification, 1-4x is really popular right now.  You can spend as much or as little as you want, but buy once cry once.  Lot's of good threads on these in the optics subforum.

O.k. Checked out the optics forum and they seem to be rather varied and alot of people seem to be going with a primary arms for a red dot. Up until recently had never even heard of them, are they decent for the price? As for price my range, around the 200 range is about my tops I want to really spend right now. If I found a deal on say a aimpoint, then yeah, I would probably go ahead and spend it as I do have more than one weapon to put optics on. But for now, my primary one needing is my carbine.

There are review threads for PA already. Your question is too open-ended; please read the FAQs and narrow down your choices. Also try to use a more descriptive title next time. Thanks.
