I have a dpms 5.56 ap4 and I want to put optics on it but I have no clue where to start.. I want to spend about 500.  Would like to goto the range and dial in a 4-500 yard shot but at the same time I would like it also to be good for a shorter range as well..I don't like larger Scopes that have a big footprint .. I see a lot of people using the smaller aimpoints, but most of then project a beam without our very little magnification right? Any help would be appreciated, this is my first rifle.

Save money and buy more ammo to practice with. Aimpoints and other red dots are typically zero magnification. Not sure what to say about a scope here other than the less you spend the bigger / heavier the scope (and the mount).

Good luck and have fun.
