From a 16", 1/7 twist. Could a 4 inch group be expected at 200 yards.....300 yards?
All things being equal,of course ! |

Quoted:
200y is doable at 4" with a decent barrel and consistent ammo. at 300y you'll need low wind and a steady hand. magnification doesn't factor into practical group sizes all that much, (but it doesn't hurt) 7x will be plenty. I agree with the magnification part but a run of the mill AR with only a military trigger and ball ammo could be straining to put many shots into a 4" group no matter what the scope is and who is shooting it. Better ammo, better trigger a good barrel and somebody who knows what they are doing and it could definitely be doable. Shooters skill and experience with that gun and trigger could be the big variable |

Glass does not effect the accuracy of your rifle at all, it does however effect your ability to shoot to the maximum potential of the rifle. You also have to shoot ammunition that will optimize the rifles performance, and after that you have to have the personal skills needed to optimize that performance. A 4" group at 300 yards is very doable if you know what you are doing and have the tools to do it. Quality glass is just one piece of the puzzle and all too often equipment gets the blame for a shooters lack of ability. Buy the best glass you can afford, find the proper ammunition for your rifle (something all to often overlooked), learn and practice, practice, practice.
I have a rifle that at one time in my life I could shoot a 4" group all day long at 300 meters with, but now I am lucky to get a ten inch group with. The rifle and glass didn't get worse over time, and the ammo didn't all the sudden go bad. My skills as a precision shooter have perished over time as I no longer shoot as constant as I once did. Shooting alone does not build these skills, but shooting properly each and every time does. The more you put into it the better your rifle will perform. Good glass helps, but your skills as a shooter are the most important factor I believe. |
