I am about to acquire a Kel-Tec PLR-16. As it is a compact, lightweight 5.56mm pistol, I would like to fit it with an optic that is also as compact and lightweight as possible. I'm almost set on a mini red dot but I'm not sure which type to get. There seems to be at least a half dozen options ranging in price from $60-$250. They all appear very similar and I don't have any personal experience with any of them.
I don't mind spending serious money on optics for my serious weapons but this gun will basically be a toy so I don't want to drop $600 on an RMR. I also don't want a fragile POS that won't hold zero either. Suggestions? |

Primary Arms microdot seems to be a good value for the quality. Get a good mount likes American Defense, Daniel Defense or Larue and you won't be more than $200 into it. What I was referring to is the tiny red dots not the Aimpoint Micro style tube sights. Docter, Pride Fowler, Burris Fastfire, etc. If I can't find a mini dot to suit me, my next option is a PA Micro or Bushnell TRS-25 but they won't require a mount on the PLR-16. |

I love the Docter Sight I'm selling, but for a .223/5.56, I'd recommend a 3.25MOA Docter. Make sure it's the Sight II Plus (waterproof) version.
That said, I've heard great things about the Fastfire II (4MOA), and nothing but good stuff about the Primary Arms MRD (though at 5+MOA, it's a bit bigger than the other two).. For $239 at CDNN, the Docter Sights are a great deal...I think the Fastfire II's can be found for $170. I don't know if the Docters are worth $70 more than the Fastfires, but I like that it uses metal and glass and is a Trijicon product (now), so I paid the extra money. NOTE: One thing I don't like is that both Docter Sight II Plus and Fastfire's are labeled on the box as WATERPROOF but the Fastfire manual say they're "water-resistant" and the Docters are supposedly only "splashproof" unless you buy the special military/LE waterproof version. I want to know a sight will work in a heavy rain or after being dunked...which is why I like the RMRs so much (but not $300 more). |
