| I was looking on another site and there was a post comparing a eotech and aimpoint. The op said that he has not had an eotech that would hold zero. He was torture testing the aimpoint and eotech and he said the eotech would not hold zero but the aimpoint would. One of the tests was dropping a ar15 with the eotech attached and then dropping it with the aimpoint attached (about 6 feet)and the eotech would not hold its zero. Please say it ain't so, I was just going to buy an eotech. I don't know much about how either one of them works internally. But I wouldn't think that they were that different. A lot of people own them and I wouldn't think that they would still in business if thier product would not hold up to some punishment. |
I think the guys is being bias toward Aimpoint, I have used both, owned both and been issued both. They both work well. After all if EoTech didnt hold Zero why would the military issue a weapons sight that sucks? By your EoTech with confidence I have never had either fail on me yet.
|
| I saw a torture test on the M4 Carbine forum with an XPS eotech. The eotech came out great. The failure with the zero was the aftermarket mounting systm he put on the eotech. THAT broke. Therefore, it lost zero... He bashed the hell out of the eotech against a tree and beat the hell out of the aluminum hood. But, the optic still worked. I think he hurt his arm doing it, if I remember right |

EoTech's are great sites, but the battery life does suck... period, If the EoTech had the same battery life of the Aimpoint I think there would be no bias towards them.
I have had two 511's and a 516 and both of the 511's seemed to go dead right when I needed them, the 516 was not as bad but I still had to replace the batteries much more often than I should. That is the main reason I swapped to nothing but Trijicon and Aimpoint optics. I would like to get a ELCAN SpecterDR, but I don't see that happening any time soon. ETA: To answer your question, all three of my EoTech's held zero just fine. |
| Before I bought my 553, I swapped my 556A65 between my two ARs. Never had a problem with wandering zero or anything. This was also with the standard knob tightened mount, not the accucam. I believe EOTech states that their sights will hold zero with a maximum wandering of 1 MOA. |
| I've never had the 511 or 516 but I've always heard bad stuff. I have had a 512 and a XPS 2-0. I can tell you the battery life with lithium batteries is good enough for me. I change batteries maybe once a year. I have taken both of them off to put on other optics and then put them back on without having anymore than a 1 MOA shift in Point of impact. To me that's top of the line. I thiink the 512 is probably the best but I haven't had my XPS as long to feel as comfortable with it as I do the 512. |

I've ran 4 different EOTechs on patrol rifles and I've experienced almost no shift in zero. This is saying alot because if you knew the abuse these guns took while in the trunk of our cruisers. Whether they're housed in a quality Pelican case or not the constant abuse they go through daily speaks volumes on how well they hold up in the elements and in trunks. As for batteries, use lithiums and stop worrying about it! Yes, if you are using alkaline batteries they are not going to last especially in very hot or very cold environments! LITHIUMS only and you're good to go! |

The AA or the 123 versions do not suck with battery life. You'll get an easy 6 months of constant use with many going longer then that with reports of a year of use. The AP of course has better battery life. It's a simple red dot. Less needed power. My 3 512's have never lost zero. |

In 2005 I watched a bunch of Marines start a class with EOTechs and finish with iron sights. Couldn't hold zero. What eotech and what was it mounted with? It doesn't matter. Those sites are no longer in use. They had a bad batch. Eotech fixed those issues years ago. |

I love my Aimpoint but Aimpoint people get all elitist over EOTechs for some reason and that has kinda turned me against the people who talk up Aimpoints while refusing to acknowledge the strengths of EOTechs. My EOTech holds its zero just fine. The people saying that it doesn't probably heard it from the same few sources...sources that probably mounted the optic incorrectly. I'm not saying it can't happen, i'm just saying that I highly doubt it. |

That reminds me I need to change the batteries in my T1. I've had it on since 2007. Stop bragging, the only thing aimpoint has on eotech is battery life The ability to leave my optic on full time is the most important consideration in an optic for me. |
|
1. Durability. Aimpoint sights have been proven time and time again that they are a superior sight. 6 Feet is the Mil spec drop test. Some sight can take this test a few times, but Aimpoint sights can withstand hundreds of drops from this height and higher.
2. Battery life. Nothing in the world comes close to an Aimpoint sight. ALL electronic sight companies measures there battery life in hours, Aimpoint measures theirs in years. Tritium lamps are a good alternative, but it can cost hundreds of dollars to replace a tritium lamp. Replacing a battery in an Aimpoint only costs a few dollars. 3. Water immersion. Almost every optic on the market measures there water immersion in hours. Aimpoint sights have an indefinite water immersion. All of this said I have a Eo that has never lost zero. I also have a broken clock..... |

I have used Eotech's extensively.
I have found one that would not hold a zero. Had slack in the adjustments. This is a known issue and is encountered rarely. Basically, I have found the odd duck that had problems from the manufacturing process, but I have been unable to break one or make it lose its zero by using it. |

I had an Eotech 512 for a long time. Great sight. I love the reticle personally, super fast on target. I now have an Aimpoint Micro, and sold the Eotech, not because the Eotech was bad, but the Aimpoint was a ton lighter, and the battery life is insane. I never had any problems with the Eotech holding a zero. I'm considering running one of the new smaller Eotech's on my next build.

Eotech 552 for 4 years and an XPS for over a year...both held zero fine (552 on a Larue mount and XPS on a GG&G accucam).
I didn't torture test the XPS, but I took it on and off quite a bit and it got dropped a few times (never even left a mark though––wish I could say that about the T1 I bruised the first day I got it, with just a slight pavement mark from a drop of 4 feet). I'm sure the Seals put the Eotechs through the paces before buying the SU231A contract even if it was, like all optic purchases, just for an option (as people like to point out). Arfcom is definitely Aimpoint territory (heck, I just got a T1 and love it), and Eotechs get a lot of criticism here––but overseas the Eotechs are the optic of choice for an awful lot of the go-fast guys (not that there needs perfectly overlap most range––and possible HD––shooters). Having owned both, I think the Eotechs probably can't be as tough as the Aimpoint primarily because they're more complicated with more technology/circuitry (and the structural integrity of a tube is intrinsically tougher than a square). That said, I think the EXPS/XPS and the Aimpoints can all take more of a beating than 99.9% of people will give them in their usable life (which for some is much shorter than others). I suppose if you were to drop both optics (not installed on a mount or gun!?!) where they'd land flat on the rear lense area, from 10 feet up, onto a rock or spike that stuck up a half an inch, I think the Eotech would win that "torture" test...but other than that one scenario, my money would be on the Aimpoint. ;o) Sure It's nice to leave a T1 on setting 8 for years, but for most people it doesn't take much to hit one button to turn on the Eotech and have that 1MOA dot for long stuff and the 65MOA ring (which is 4MOA at inside the house ranges of 6.25 yards versus the T1's 0.21MOA reticle at 6.25 yards) at close stuff...of course, if you're Home Defense CQB is going to last longer than 8 hours with no lulls, the reticle size would be the last thing you need to worry about. |
|
Oh, I didn't realize the 4MOA LED dots stayed 4MOA at 5yards or 100 yards.
Must be a terminology thing...what I meant is, the dot is VERY small indoors versus the 65MOA ring/dot. The 3.4MOA T-1 is almost 1/20th the size of the 65MOA ring. For example, holding my T-1 up, looking at the furthest wall––10 feet away––it doesn't cover 4 inches....I'd say less than half an inch, but it's blooming a bit on setting 8 with my astigmatism. My eotech 65MOA reticle seems like 2-3 inches at the same distance (it's blooming too, on it's standard "on" setting). |
