Hey guys I am building a 50 Beowulf on a flat top upper and I would like to get some opinions / options on what would be a good optic for it. I will be mostly shooting it for fun at the range but I will be using this rifle to hunt hogs when I visit by buddy's in South Carolina.

I have been thinking about getting a EO tech (512) for it but, I also see that there are many people who recommend the Aimpoint's. I am unsure of what the best option will be for what I want to use the rifle for

thanks guys for any advice

I feel that Aimpoints are superior to Eotechs. I have both and when I say "superior" I mean in a life or death situation regardless of the circumstances, environment conditions, and all possible unknown factors.

If it is for target practice and for playing around with then the Eotech is fun, a cool reticle and just neat to have.

For hog hunting I would say a nice 1-4 optic would be ideal. For range fun, the eotech will be good. An Aimpoint will work as well.

There are 2 primary differences between the etch and aimpoint that you need to look at.
1) Battery life. Aimpoints are measured in years, eotechs in weeks.
2) Reticle. Aimpoints are either a 2 or 4 MOA dot, depending on model. Eotechs have a 2 (I think) MOA dot with a 65 MOA dot surrounding it. Look through both of them and see which one you like better. If you like them both equally, then consider battery life (if that matters to you). Also, check out the optics section in the AR15 discussions forum and see what others are saying about these choices.

I have an EOTECH 517 mounted on my carbine and have been very happy.  I like the combination of the 65 MOA ring and 1 MOA dot for both fast and precise aiming.  Also, you don't have to buy a separate mount which might be important if you are on a budget.  I think a 512 offers a lot of optic for the money.

I was thinking of getting a magnifier for the EO tech / Aimpoint option  so that should help in the hunting aspect of the rifle I am just hoping that ether one can handle the recoil of the Beowulf

I have a 512 on my wulf it's taken about 500 rounds or Beowulf and 3k 5.56 and never had issue

As far as the fanboy talk. I don't consider battery life an issue on this rifle as it's never going to be a SHTF rifle

Also the eotech has a 1 moa dot with 65 moa circle around it. I like it better but thats really a preference issue. With a magnifier the 1 moa dot is nice.

For full discloser I have an r-1 on one of my ar's which I also like and is a fine optic. IMO pick which rentical you like best because that's really the only difference in this case

PS the 512 won't work well with lower 1/3 and a magnifier if you want a magnifier go absolute or get a 517 if you want an eo

They're 1 MOA. That's why some people prefer EOTechs. WIth the smaller dot, you theorectically have a better chance of hitting distant targets over a 2/4 MOA Aimpoint.

Beowulfs and scopes don't mix.  You run the risk of hitting the scope on your eye with the recoil since most scopes don't have a large eye relief.   I have used EoTechs and now both my Wulfs have Aimpoint CompM4S' on them.  I love the CompM4S as it is easy to use and very rugged.  Battery life is second to none out there with 8 years on one AA lithium battery.

However, and Eotech isn't a bad choice, or an Aimpoint M3 or ML3 if you need a less expensive Aimpoint option.

Trijicon AccuPoint 1.25-4x24 Riflescope.  No batteries needed and great eye relief.

That is what my dad put on his wit a green pointer and a P.E.P.E.R scope mount it works very well and no eye relief problems.
The Beowulf has a range of 200 yards might as well use it.

I use a 2.5x Simmons shotgun scope on mine.  It is very well suited as it's built to handle the heavy recoil and it has a lot of eye relief and it has just the right amount of magnification for 25-250 yards which is about the practical limit of the cartridge anyway.

I didnt think about using a shotgun scope but seems like a very good idea i guess ill have to check out some of them along with the others that have been mentioned. The EO tech having the 1 moa dot is what is drawing me to it over the aimpoint's right now but the battery life is a good selling point too
