I was randomly looking through youtube for ar related vids. Anyway, I saw someone have a magnifier behind their red dot. He hit a button and it flipped to the side which I thought was awesome. Long range to short range in a snap. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them. Can it handle being banged around and stuff? I would also like some affordable recommendations if possible. Quick search for a complete kit was in the $900+ range!!!! My first build will cost less than that. Thanks guys.

Thats what it costs for an Aimpoint or Eotech setup.  If you need a less expensive setup look to Primary Arms.

Aimpoint in a Larue Mount - pull back and flip to side.  Strong and good quality.

I was just about to say $610 isn't tooo bad, but then I read it's just for the magnifier. And a good quality red dot will cost over $300 right?

Around $500-600 for an aimpoint and mount. That $610 does include the mount and the magnifier.

Another $600 to $800 depending on your tastes.  Buy once cry once.

Optics always seem to run more than the rifle.  If you think this is bad, stay away from sniper rifles and optics.

If you're like me, and can't swing the big bucks right now, or as is also my case, testing the concept, I have some advice. I bought the Mako 5x. The one I got was filled with black specs. I called Mako, and they gave me a return number without delay or hesitation to send it in for replacement. I had the older model although I bought it new. I shipped it in but the tracking computer said it was still stuck somewhere, ( this was during the big snows), so In called to see if they had it yet. They looked it up and said it still wasn't there. They went ahead and pulled one from the warehouse and shipped it out to me. the new one looks and works great. I bought a FTS mount from Primary Arms. It is very tight and solid. You just pull it back and flip to the right. Only takes a second when you get used to it. Feels like it will last forever really. There's a good chance that I will go with an Eotech magnifier and a Larue FTS mount down the road since this is my go to gun, and I will put that kit behind my son's PA red dot. He likes that type, so an Aimpoint is in his future as well.

So, how much did that first setup cost you? I am in the 'best bang for your buck' mode right now. I only shell out the big bucks if it is absolutely worth it.

I am scared to even look at the sniper optics, but out of curiosity, what is the average price on an average scope?

Also, thanks for the quick replies.

I got the magnifier from Sportsman's Guide for about $119.00, ( It's 107.99 for club members right now, and I've bought enough stuff to have saved about 5 times the club membership price), and the FTS mount is 49.99 for the standard, and 54.99 for the high mount for a raised Eotech or Aimpoint.

The Aimpoint and EOTech magnifiers are built to much higher shock standards that our PA brand. Ours are pretty rugged and handle hunting and range duties just fine. We also stock the Vortex, Burris and EOTech magnifers with several mount options. What size target at what distance are you shoot at. A red dot and magnifier is a great setup but it is a compromise and the sight picture will not be as precise as a scope.

Generally, they have better eye relief as well.  Having said that, if you're limited in funds and need the occasional magnification, then they are not a bad start.

I actual practice, there isn't that much difference in eye relief. I looked through four brands that were mounted on guns at one nearby store, and measured then eye relief, more by my fingers than anything, but still, less than a half inch one way or another between brands. I would say that the biggest difference would be in the sturdiness of the magnifier under combat conditions, and the clarity of the glass at the edges, parallax to some extent, and glass quality overall.

He speaks what is true...and they are expensive, heavy and bulky.

IMO a  good 1-4 scope works very very well. May not look as GI Joe though.

Hehehe, I remember my wife nearly having a coronary when I was looking at a Schmidt & Bender, the family heirloom line didn't work either.

Your best bet OP, get an Aimpoint PRO for $400, and get one of the primary arms deluxe magnifiers and a flip to side mount, should be less than $700.

Yes, but for me, I leave the magnifier flipped to the side unless I need it. The Eotech/Aimpoint is a much faster setup for cqb, and anything out to at least 50-100 yards. Those are the ranges that most of us would be dealing with if our firearms are used in the manner for which we purchased them, namely, self defense. Once beyond that point, or even at those ranges for more accurate shots, flip the magnifier over and work with it. It can be very accurate, especially when using the Eotech because of the 1moa dot. If you want precise, pinpoint accuracy, then a scope would be a better choice, or for distances over 400 yards on game, long distance target shooting, load development etc. I'm looking at getting a new scope for a couple of the reasons listed, but will get one with an upward power factor somewhere between 12x and 16x.

Top carbine with Hensoldt 2.5X formerly a tank rocket launcher optic with the tank silhouette reticle removed, was once sold by LaRue Tactical but no longer available, shown with LaRue pivot flip to side QD mount.

I only seldom use my magnifier when I'm shooting 100+ yd with the LaRue flip to side mount I just pull the magnifier body to the rear and pivot it to the right side if I'm not using it, or I could just remove the whole magnifier with the QD release lever.

The Hensoldt rocket launcher optic are no longer available from LaRue but could be found from surplus sellers or maybe even ebay, just unscrew the lens retaining ring and remove the reticle and get a LaRue LT755-30T QD pivot mount, you would also need a LaRue 30mm ring to 1" ring half inserts and you're in business.

ETA: The Hensoldt magnifier and LaRue pivot mount package (with inserts) I bought several years ago for less than $200.

Seems like most of you guys have manual versions. Is that better than the automatic ones?

In my case the LaRue pivot FTS QD mount has a more robust design with bigger diameter hinge pin and beefier mounting ring than the other brands that I looked at from my local gun dealer.

Also I don't want to accidentally push the release button while I'm sighting or carrying my weapon, that's why I prefer a manual but very easy simple operation.

LaRue Tactical have one of the best customer service in the business, lifetime warranty, if you ain't happy they ain't happy, they'll do everything to make it right.

I bought an airsoft aimpoint 3x clone several years ago on ebay. I put it in a Larue flip mount and it has been an awesome setup. I've run this combo in tons of three gun matches and never had an issue.
