This topic was started in the build thread several days ago but I am bringing ithere to the correct forum to get it figured out.

I just built my first AR with a flat top upper.  I got a Leapers UTG red dot optic (please dont fill this thread with post after post about what I should have bought, I dont get into the gear pissing contest).  I have a magpul flip up rear sight and the front is a standard A2 post.  It came with low rings which I figured wouldnt co-witness so I bought some UTG medium height rings to get an absolute co-witness.  I mounted them with the optic but it still doesnt seem to co-witness properly.

Here is the optic:

Here are the rings:

From what it looks like, to get an absolute cowitness I have to raise my cheek above the stock.  Does this mean I need an attached cheek weld?  What would I do if I dont want that?

I would appreciate any advice (other than you should buy XYZ optic instead).

Thanks guys!

Did you try it with the rings that came with it? Seems that if any of the rings/mounts would cowitness, it would be the ones that came with the scope.

If that doesn't work, then it's honestly a case of "buy something else." Something else that is advertised as what you want.

The rings that came with it are low profile, I guess to use with a carry handle.  I looked at several different products and most all come with low rings. I guess I should have ordered the high.

There's always the possibility that NEITHER the included mount or the rings you bought will co-witness perfectly.

With the cheap scope, I would just keep the included mount and not worry about co-witnessing perfectly (unless the front sight post interferes with your sight picture).

If you use the mount provided you get two things:  1) the front of the optic hits the forearm so it cant sit horizontal, 2) the red dot is about halfway down the front A2 site...

I normally prefer iron sights but wanted to try out a red dot but this is a pain in the butt...

Give it a try with a 1/2" riser attached to the upper.

You need to adjust the scope elevation and windage until the dot aligns with the iron sights.

If the dot is not sighted to match the irons it will NEVER line up with them.

At this point, I don't think he's even got it mounted so he can see past the FSB with it.

Ok I figured out the problem and I am way too embarrassed to say what it was.  Thanks for the help guys!
