so im wanting to get an aimpoint cause they will co-witness on my vltor handguards, but im looking and the comp ml3 is around 500 while the comp m4 is 850 is there anything that justifies the extra 350$ or would the ml3 work just perfect for a range/home defense gun?

Yes, the ML3 would work just perfect for a range/home defense gun. I would check the EE for better prices. Good to excellent condition ML3's go for $350-400. M4's in the $500+ range and don't forget about the H1/T1.

If you don't need night vision compatibility then check out the CompC3. SWFA's got a great package deal w/mount & flip-ups for $400 last time I checked.
