So here's my very first AR build!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/fear58/IMG_2024.jpg

(I know the front magpul shouldn't be on the gas block... I just ordered some handguard rails for it...)

So I have the MBUS's and next I want some sort of optic. I have a 3-9x Redfield that I pulled off my 7mag, I just need some higher ring mounts so that it will clear the front of the handguard and the rear MBUS. I'm now leaning towards a red dot though. Can someone recommend a good red dot under $150 that looks pretty cool as well? Maybe I should just stick with mounting the scope since I already have MBUS'?

Thanks for any recommendations!

For inexpensive red dots, check out the offerings from Primary Arms as well as the Vortex Strikefire.

Primary Arms M3 clone. Cool looking, high quality and low price.

Strikefire works great, easy to use and has a lifetime warranty.  I have 2 on my AR's and i love them.

Ummm do I see an MBUS moutned on a gas block?

That's going to melt if you shoot the gun a lot.  That, and the front MBUS is the wrong height for a gas block.

Read his first post...he already knows about the front MBUS, he got the lecture in the Tech forum when he posted his rifle.

For the money, I'd get this PA Micro in ADM mount for $150

Solid optic, good mount.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

With that said, I'm looking towards one that hasn't been suggested at all LOL.

It's between the Bushnell Tactical Elite

or the

Bushnell Trophy 1x28

I'm THINKING that while the 1x28 is lesser in quality, it will allow me to cowitness my magpulls. It seems as if the Tactical Elite is too long of a scope to get adaquete cowitness. I'm sure the right mounts could fix either of these guys up.

Any recommendations on these two? Also, any suggestions on a proper cowitness-able scope mount?

Thanks in advance again!

PA Micro.  Very cool little RD.  Once you get that front BUIS right, it'll co-witness fine.....either absolute or 1/3 depending on mount.

I find both these optics to be pretty crap.  A decent red dot with the right mount will co-witness with your MBUS's once you fix the front sight.

The sights from Primary Arms will offer correct mounts that will allow anything from upper 1/3 co-witness to a lower 1/3 co-witness.  I like absolute co-witness or lower 1/3 co-witnesses.  Do yourself a favor and follow the advice of people here who have already made the mistakes.

Dang, for less than $100?  Is this for real?

Actually, both red dots with mounts will run about $150.00 on average for either or.

I'd say go with the PA micro.  Then, if you do get a magnified optic down the road, you can put the PA micro on a canted mount (like the DD 1 o'clock mount) or stick it on top of a magnified mount, so that you still have a close-in optic.  They can be had with a workable mount for $100 or so, but I'm sure it is worth the extra $50 to go to the ADM mount.  I have very recently learned that with optics of any type, the mounting is more important than optical clarity or brightness.  Mounts matter.

Then start saving for the aimpoint

I know.  I feel like an idiot for buying an aimpoint.  That is for my HD/SHTF rifle though, the others will be getting PA red dots.

budget dot vs aimpoint probably has been debated to death...but it boils down to how you are applying the optic and what standards and expectations you are willing to accept.

Fear58,

i am a big fan of red dots myself.  but if your eyes aren't perfect, it may be challenging to shoot longer distances (200 yards+).
you can always down the road add a red dot magnifier by the way.

i have been resistant to scopes on my AR...but recently gave in and picked up a 1-4X.  it seems a 1-4X scope with true 1X is a good general purpose optic.
true 1x being you can shoot with both eyes open.

my answer:  get both!  make sure you get a quality quick disconnect mounts so you can swap back an forth without loosing too much on zero.

PA has a 1-4X by the way:

Which is exactly why THIS time I stepped up for the real deal.  I sleep with this gun next to me everynight and the "always on for years" option seemed like a real winner.  My M1 Carbine and 22's will be getting clones though.
