I have a spare lower receiver and an A2 stock lying around. I was thinking of buying a BCM 20" upper that comes with a forged front sight base and adding a free float tube to it. My question has to do with mating an ACOG 3.5x TA-11 or a 1-4x variable power optic on a Larue mount to the upper receiver in combination with a std forged FSB. How much of the reticle will be obscured by the front sight on such a set-up? Would you recommend replacing the front sight with a milled gas block or a flip-down front sight base to allow for an unobscured field of view?
This set-up would be used to shoot plain M193 ammo for 3-gun and for fun. I'm not convinced that spending the money on a stainless barrel when shooting mostly 55 grain M193 would improve accuracy that much. I don't reload, and I intend to buy small quantities of match grade ammo for my SPR project instead. Thanks. |

Thanks for the picture Molon.
Any other thoughts? Does anyone have a pic of an ACOG with a front sight in the foreground? I didn't see any in the special pic thread for ACOGs. I think a flip-up front sight would work better than the standard one for my eyes then. |

I don't notice it when actually engaging targets. |

Depends on the power of the scope, and whether the optic is mounted at lower 1/3 or absolute co-witness. I have a 3-9x scope- at 3x setting, on either a barrel with a mid-length, or a carbine-length gas block/front sight, I hardly see the standard fixed front sights- except for an indistinct dark area at the bottom of the field of view. But that's just my case- see what others say.
If it's an issue with your ACOG, you could just cut off the top of the gas block, attach a rail and mount a flip-up front sight on the rail. With the low power ACOGS such as the 1.5x, a fixed front scope will get in the way, unless maybe if the ACOG is mounted on the top of a carry handle. |

I didn't notice it for the longest time and then one day I removed the TA11 and looked through it and thought that the sight picture looked brighter so I put it back on the gun and sure enough it was dark again. Not a huge amount but noticeable. |
