Here's a little review I read. I almost wanted one. Decided on an EOtech for battery commonality with my flashlight. |

I just got mine in the mail less than a week ago. I was on the fence between the Lucid and Sparc. I believe they're both assembled in the same factory if that matters. I have a Ruger MKIII that would go good with that Sparc though... I have not had a chance to take the HD7 to the range yet, but I did pop off a magazine in the backyard. I can only have about 30 feet before the treeline, but as far as I can tell, this thing is dead on from the factory when mounted fully forward on my receiver. No parallax issues or reticle drift as far as I can tell. Range report as soon as I can put this sucker through the ringer. Initial pros & cons listed below> Pros. Four reticles to swap from. It's kind of like having the speed of an Eotech donut dot, with the precision of a 2 moa Aimpoint. The 2 moa dot is precise enough to reach out to those small targets, and the donut dot is big enough to get a quick sight picture for up close work. It'd be perfection if the donut had a hair more circumference around the center dot. I'd prefer just a bit more open space there. I'm not a fan of the remaining two reticles. (the crosshair & the one that looks like New Mexico's state flag )
Co-witnesses in lower 1/3. Strangely enough, the turrets were adjusted perfectly from the factory. I drop my head down, peek through my irons, and the dot sits precisely on top of my front sight post. Build seems extremely solid. I know it's the insides that count, but if outward appearances are any indication, this thing can take a beating. The rubber armor is very thick. The exposed body is coated in what appears to be powder coat or cooked on enamel. Turrets and base clamp look and feel almost like one of those non-stick frying pans. Bead blasted anodize? Anyhow, I've been shaking the crap out of this sucker and gave it a few love taps on the side of my desk before I mounted it. So far no rattles and the red dot has never even flickered. It recalls what mode and brightness level you were in when you power back up. The auto brightness mode can be fickle in unevenly lit areas, so I'm glad I can bypass it if I want. Auto mode actually works pretty decently after dusk though. It's amazing how fast the brightness levels adjust themselves. Glass looks good. A slight blue/green tint, but no blurry edges or anything like that. AAA battery. None of the red dot optics in this price range are going to run 10K+ hours on a single battery, but I at least have the option of stealing batteries out of the DVD remote or alarm clock if it came down to it. That's better than beating up grandpa for his hearing aid batteries. AA's would have been sweeter, but I don't think the Lucid needs to get any beefier. Cons: Two hour auto shutdown. No prob on the range, but I can imagine my two hours being up at the most inopportune of times. I suppose if I had to use this sucker seriously, I'd make sure to power cycle every hour or so, and leave my rear iron popped up just to be safe. It's a rather hefty 13oz. It does seem to balance out my 16" middy a bit more at least. Lens caps would be nice, but I don't see how I can mount one with that battery cap where it is. That front lens is a dust magnet. If Anyone has a solution, feel free to share. I look forward to putting the Lucid HD7 through it's paces. I bought this thing mainly to make range time more fun for new shooters- mostly women & metrosexuals. If they can't break this thing, then maybe Lucid has a winner on it's hands. |

I bought one. Mine was a slightly earlier one where they were adding a 2X magnifier for no charge. I have only used it with the 2X magnifier installed so far. I especially liked the fact that the mounting screws and nuts are STEEL, having seen buggered up aluminum mounting hardware on cheaper sights. Anyway, the first time out the reticle dissappeared after the first shot. I called the company, explained what happened and was give a RA # to return it for warrantee. The day after it arrived back at the warrantee address, the company called me. I was told my sight was taken to the lab and dissassembled to find the problem. A defective solder connection between the battery housing and the electronics was found. I was told they took a new sight, put it in their recoil simulator, cycled it 150 times at .338 mag recoil level, and it worked perfectly...would it be OK if they sent me that tested sight. I said great. It arrived 2 days later. I have since taken the replacement sight twice to the range with zero reticle problems and 247 shots fired. The reticles were bright enough for use in full sunlight. When on automatic brightness and you and the sight are in the shade or full sun and the target is in the opposite condition, you might have to switch to manual brightness mode...it's neat to have those options available to the user.
I have not tried the different reticles for possible changes in impact point from one reticle to the next...will do that tomorrow. I also noted that the 1/2 moa clicks move the impact more than 1/2 moa, but that could be affected by where the sight is mounted on my rifle and my ammo (300 Whisper). I would like to have some type of cover for the scope when it is not being used. I, like many others, am looking for that "sweet spot" price-wise and performance-wise, that is better than the cheap (under $100) red dots, but less expensive than the EOTECH/ACOG/AIMPOINT for useage on recreational AR's. Note: On my absolutely has to work 100% of the time AR kept ready to protect the farm animals, I have an AIMPOINT M2 mounted. I think the LUCID may be that sweet spot. My RA # was 004, so maybe mine was only the 4th one returned for warrantee (it was returned by me 2 weeks ago and I got the replacement 1 week ago). |
