One thing that you will notice is that the rear notch and the ghost ring below it will blur into one large u-shaped aperture.  I find it amusing that all of the pictures will show the rear sight and front are both clear and distinct.  This is not the case in real life.  The rear sight is so close to your eye that it is impossible to see the rear notch clearly.  I have the greatest respect for Paul Howe's service and his skill with firearms, but I think that he missed with this concept.

One aperture filed out to an open 'U' (M1 Garand/WWII-style) might be more effective, at least for fast aquisition and light... IMO.  Even lopping off one aperture, and using the protective ears is an effective close in/fast sight arrangement, since the theory is speed and you can't focus on anything that close anyway...it's all about ensuring your eye/head placement to acquire the front sight, not actually 'using' the rear sight for aiming..  As my irons were rarely my primary, and I found little real-world/field use for the small, target aperture, that was the one I tended to monkey with for a fast sight, as the close range aperture would do to 300, minute of popup, for me.YMMV  I guess if you wanted to move your BUIS farther away from your eye, you might be able to take more advantage of the standard notch sight, but I've never tried it.  With it up close, you're either in the aperture or ignoring it and using reference markers only...at least with it that close to your eye...but that's just my thinking/theory....how you could 'focus' on it at all is beyond me.

The notch would have to be pretty wide, otherwise it's too blurry for rifles with rear sights so close to the shooter's eye.  It works better if it were further ahead towards the muzzle.  The notch position of my HK rifles are not easy to use, and the notch is much wider, in a V shape. I rotate the drum to the aperture instead.

i was thinking when doing quick shooting you look over the rear aperture, but with the notch, you could look threw the top up the aperture...heck i might pick one up and try it out anyways...

I'd just use the CQB aperture found on most rear sights, the notch is far too small, it'll blur to the extent that the notch is "filled", due to its distance to the eye.  Not to mention it's something else you have to retrain yourself for, there'd be no need to get used to it if you use the peep sights, since small peep or larger CQB peep, it's the same method.

My Thompson has a notch rear sight and an elevation adjustable peep, the notch is cut about the same size as the one you found, which is to say unusable.  But feel free to get one and experience it yourself, mine came with the weapon, I sure as hell wouldn't buy one if given the choice
