Looking at trying to get a night vision scope for my Ar-15
The purpose is for varmit shooting and control.
Im only looking at gen1 because thats im willing to put in to it,i would not be using it to much ,maybe once a month
Im trying to see if any of you have used a night scope, what kind it was,and what your thoughts were on it.
Im trying to keep the cost as resonable as i possibly can
Im looking for your recommendations and why you recommend it.
Thank You

Hi, we have a NV Forum here http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=6&f=18 if you would like to post there. Most folks will tell you (us included) to always try to save for at least a Gen 2 system if you can. No amount of money is worth the 60's technology that a Gen 1 brings. A D-300 is a very good entry model for a Gen 2 system.  Hope this helps.

Anyone tell me how old the design is on an Ar-15?

You shouldn't compare the age of the AR-15's design with that of NV; they are two entirely different types of technology.

As Vic mentioned, most folks will be VERY disappointed with Gen1 the second that they put their eye(s) behind a more advanced device.

NV ain't cheap, but high end devices will really impress even experienced users with their capabilities.

Post up in the NV forum; there is a wealth of info available there, and most of the "regulars" are highly civilized....except when it comes to ATN.

the best way I can describe gen1 is pretty friggin' primative, but useful under good conditions...
save your coin.. it's worth it.

not a fan of ATN...

I have a Gen 1 monocular. It looks cool and works really well in conditions where most people could see without it

There is actually alot of truth to that statement.  High quality day optics easily outperform crappy NV in terms of image quality if the conditions are right.

Go buy 2 ND3 laser designators , one to dediacate on a gun and one to scan with. This will give about 160 yrds of usable light to use at night and your better of than gen 1

I hear 'ya, man.  First off, everybody's right.......Gen1 cannot compare to Gen2 or 3, AT ALL.  That being said, some people simply cannot save the loot for Gen  stuff, and some people (like me) just can't justify 3 Grand for something that will see limited use.

I live in Gen1 NV-Land.  Although I'd LOVE to have a PVS-14, I simply can't justify it.  I've been searching around for a banged-up, beat-up used one that is so ugly, I could afford to buy it for my son who is being deployed in a couple weeks because he NEEDS it, but they simply don't exist.

As for me, I've learned to maximize the Gen 1 stuff.  There's a HUGE difference in the quality of various manufacturers/resellers.  Unless I can actually look through it, I don't buy it.  I found a Gen1 monocular at a gun show made by Luna Optics (I think) that was amazingly clear and had great resolution.  If you find a GOOD Gen1 optic, the best thing you can do is add a high quality illuminator.  Gen1 stuff is really hurt by lack of illumination.  Adding a "Da Torch" or LASER illuminator makes all the difference with Gen1 stuff, as long as it's not junk to begin with.
