Just bought a new Aimpoint Comp4. Never used one before. At medium to high settings, the red dot appears like a "star" at times, even having a small second dot appear at the 7 o'clock position some times.

This appears to go away if I leave the sight on for a while, or move back about two feet from the sight.

I did move the sight as far forward as possible.

Is this normal ops or do I have a problem (or is operator error?).

The sight is mounted on an M-4 type platform and the stock is at three back.

Happy Easter, Thanks,

Simple test: Rotate the M4 360 degrees while looking through it. If the dot doesn't rotate then the problem is with your eyes (astigmatism is most likely). Turning the brightness down a notch or two may help as well.
HTH, keep us posted...

You can turn the Aimpoint M4 up WAY too bright. If it blooms, turn it down.

You usually only need the highest settings in very bright environments, like when the sun is behind your target in the desert in the summer.

Distortions to the dot are typically related to the operators eyes, like mentioned above. BSW

I don't have an Aimpoint, but I was having the same issue with my Strikefire. I thought that I was going to have to send it back. It turns out, it was my eyes messing with me. I was testing it indoors and for some reason my eyes could not adjust properly. As soon as I took the site outdoors, the problem completely disappeared.

This may or may not pertain to your issue. If your lucky, it may just be that siimple.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I turned 43 last week and my eyes aren't what they used to be. I did rotate the sight 180, and it was the same.

Looks like I may need bi-focals.

Also, outside it is much better.

Thank You all again.

FYI, I just returned from Kabul last weekend. It was cool to see all the M-4s and M-16A2s being carried. Comp4s and ACOGs were the preferred sights on all the US weapons. Some of the NATO weapons had all kinds of different sights.

Saw many beat to hell AKs carried by the ANAAC troops.
