I just made a switch from red dots to magnified optics on my carbine.  I wanted something small with low magnification, so after having heard good things about the Burris Timberline fixed 4X, I got one.  It's a nice little scope and is pretty clear.  It's about as good as you can expect for the price, but I noticed that it didn't do such a good job at dusk.  It just doesn't pull in the light.  Before I got the Burris, I was going to get the Weaver Classic 1-3X, so I went ahead and got the Weaver just to see if I was missing anything.  I've gotta tell you, the Burris has nothing on the Weaver.  The Weaver is brighter, clearer and crisper.

If any of you are hesitant to pull the trigger on the Weaver just because it's so inexpensive, don't be.  It appears that with this one, you get a lot more than what you paid for.  I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X on my HBar carbine and yes, it's better, but not much better.

I've got a Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5-4.5X scope on my rifle (paid $285 for it on closeout.) Somebody once posted, "Nice rifle, but you need to lose that POS optic."

I laughed.

Yeah, I've recently come to realize that anyone that knocks scopes like the mid to upper Weaver lines and the Bushnell Elite's does not know what they're talking about.  I was actually scouring the net trying to find the scope that you have, but decided to get the Classic because I wanted to stay light.  I even went back a non free floated handguard.

The Weaver V3 1-3 is a great value. I have a couple of them and they are amazingly clear and crisp- especially for less than $150.

I just bought a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.25-4 with an illuminated center dot and German #4 reticle. It is very clear edge to edge and was less than $350.

I think the Classic 1-3x looks GREAT.  I do like the illuminated reticle on mine, and I also like the target turrets.  But I wouldn't hesitate to grab the 1-3X, based on the quality and clarity of my 1.5-4.5X.

sleeper,

Where did you grab an Elite for $350.  At that price, I'd grab one just to have it.

Oh, I also wanted to mention that while doing my research, I noticed that a bunch of guys were making a big deal about getting a scope with a true 1X.  Now that I have it, I'm thinking that I put too much stock in that requirement.  Having a true 1X may only be important to those with perfect vision.  I'm 45 and my vision isn't what it used to be.  When I set my scope on 1X and have it focused properly, I'm still getting a magnified effect because things look blurry through my left eye and are perfectly in focus with my right eye (due to the scope).  Although I am satisfied with my purchase, I now know that I could have expanded my options by not limiting myself to scopes with a true 1X.  Even at 2X, shooting with both eyes open is not going to be a problem.

Amazon.com had them for $318 + shipping. Mine came to $325.

I have a Weaver V3 on my 10/22 and would have no problem putting it on an AR.  I'm not exactly gentle with that .22 and it's held up well.
