Im a newbie, so wondering if the magpul back up rear sight would work with the stantard front sight base

Yes they do...and very well! Very durable, very affordable, and good to go!

I'll give you the affordable piece.  But durable, not so much.  They aren't able to take abuse like a metal sight like a Troy Battlesight.

If the MBUS sights cost $300 plus for a set I would hope they would be durable. For the price I would say they are just as or more durable than any other sight  =<$300 a set.

They're plastic and cost around $ 80 a set. You can only put the front sight on rails, a gas block will melt it. On the other hand it's only $ 80
