Ok, I've been reading alot about Eotechs, and still cannot figure out which would be the best for my AR-15 flattops. Have been laboring over this decision for months and just want to get one!
Didn't like the sight picture with the XPS, returned it (discussed in other post). Considering just going with the 512 or 552. Not sure I really need night vision (am not military or law enforcement). Guess it would be nice to have the option though. Would like to have magnification in the future. The 557 appears to be specifically made for .223, but has the 7mm raised base. Is the raised base necessary for a flattop or is it just a preference/comfort thing? Have a 16" flattop with adjustable stock. Also have a 20" flattop with A2 stock. Would like to have Eotech to swap between the 2, and eventually save the money to get an ACOG for the 20", and leave the Eotech on the 16". Any suggestions? |

Standard 512 or 552 has a perfect flattop height for me and most people... AND they use AA, vs N batteries, easier to find anywhere... What was wrong with the XPS? nvm, found your thread Depending on your rail length the 512 or XPS should work fine. XPS for more crowded rails. |

| By the way. Went to a Tanner Gun Show in Denver today. Looked at a 512. Price was $369, which seems to be $40 less than the current general asking price. But I just don't like the sight picture. I know I'm crossing over to another topic/thread, and I apologize. But I just cannot see spending that kind of money on a sight that is blurry, and the center dot has a shadow. I believe I've decided to stay away from the Eotechs. Can't figure out why they are so popular. Either that, or I need a new opthomologist! |

Either you have an astigmatism or something related, or you've never actually used an Eotech on a weapon and focused on something besides the reticle itself....
Every Eotech i've ever used has a crystal clear retical when you're actually USING it and not just focusing on the reticle... |

When I first got my 511 three years ago, I thought it was broken too. But I kept it a little longer after reading about ways to NOT see a fuzzy reticle. Sure enough - take one outside and look down the street thru it - focus on an object, and od not look AT the reticle itself. Crystal clear.
If you hold it up and look at a wall or an object only a few feet away - it will look fuzzy. It's projected to infinity, and seems to be cleared when looking at an object further away. Now, I have to wear my stronger glasses for the reticle to be the clearest. Since it is projected to infinity, you must have good eyesight at further distances. |

If you don't like the XPS, Get a 512. I really like the XPS - shrug-
If you're using night vision, you should make it a priority to have an IR laser and a head mounted NVG so that ideally you're not pointing your gun at everything you want to see at night. Mike |
