I'm thinking about adding some form of optics to my flattop AR with a flipup BUIS but I'm not sure what to get. I was thinking about an Aimpoint but those are a bit too expensive right now(I also want another shotgun and Aimpoints cost just as much as a Mossberg)

Suggestions?

If you are looking for a CQB sight, honestly, save up for an Aimpoint or Eotech. Not worth the hassle to buy cheap. I have tried the generics only to deal with wandering zero issues, fogging up, falling apart, on and on. ACOGs are a popular choice, but even more expensive than an Aimpoint. Might check the EE for a good used one...

Yes they are a lot of money. Do it once and do it right. Get a troy BUIS and save your money untill you can get the aimpoint. Just use the troy even if it takes 6 or 9 months, untill you can get the primary optic.

My Bushnell Holosight II cost $275 and has worked great.  Only thing it lacks from the Eotech is the metal shield.

Save up the for good stuff. Get a BUIS and learn to shoot with that while you put cash away each month.

I have a Vortex Strikefire on one of my rifles and I'm happy with it. I guess it comes down to what the rifle will be used for, if it's strickly going to be a range gun, then I'd have no problem using a less expensive optic, but if it might be used to defend you life then I'd save and get the Aimpoint.

Save up for the Aimpoint. You wont regret it. If you wanna save money on accessories, thats cool, just dont do it on the optic. Check the EE and you can find a slightly used one for cheap.

Get the Aimpoint COMPC3 if you want to spend less money.
