I just secured a FN SCAR (Light) and was deciding on an optic to compliment my new rifle...what do you guys think of the ELCAN Specter DR?  I was offered one for $1,850.00 (after tax & delivered).  Should I jump on it?  Thanks.

We have used these extensively in my unit, and the general consensus is that they are too bulky and the mount sucks. Most guys have replaced them with something else. I would recomend a ACOG 4x32, or if you really want dual role ability, a SB short dot or a Horus talon, all of which can be upgraded w/ Larue mounts. I would NOT waste my $ on the ELCAN.

We have the newest generation available to ARF members for $1695 shipped.  Let us know.

Thanks Mike

Mike, can you get the tritium illuminated Elcans also? Also, description says dark green, but picture is grey...? Are there option available color-wise?

No go as of right now on the Tritium.  These are the newest generation, and on the color yes I know, I had the same question but their official description is dark green but it is like a gray/black color...That is the only color option available to civilians as of now.

I hope that helps?

Thanks Mike

Is it still true that only the Dark Earth colored units have the NV illumination settings?

Honestly why on earth would you care about NV settings or even want them?  The only NV unit you would want to use with the DR would be in front of it and require visible settings.  This is not like an Aimpoint where you'd put a monocular behind it.

I don't.  I remember there was someone here who had a dark earth model that was not nv compatible.

I just like to keep up with the specs of products I am interested in.

I have one and I like it. My buddy who has my old 4x ACOG on his M4 likes it too.

I have only been to the range with it though.

I am not going say that it is small, but you don't really notice the size.

I think most people are turned off by the ARMS mount that comes on these.

Get yourself a S&B short dot, you won't regret it.  Best optic I've used and I've tried them all (except the elcan).  Weight is the only issue with the short dot.  Elcan uses ARMS mount, which IMO don't hold a zero well.  I have an eotech with ARMS and it's always shifting, if only a minute shift.  The FDE Acog's with doctors are very nice too.  Maybe a lighter and cheaper option.  Hope this helps.

I have had 0 issues with the ARMS mounts, but -
1. I have Colt.
2. It hasn't been put through anything stressful.

I dont think that colt makes a difference. All of our weapons are colt, and we do use our weapons "stressfully", and we have had epidemic problems with arms mounts to the point that we wont use any of their products again.

If you're going to get the Short Dot, I would strongly recommend the latest SFP reticle version so you can use the Flash Dot at all magnifications. I found the Flash Dot hard to use at 4x on the FFP version.

The Elcan is a better optic as far as FOV, features, exit pupil, reticle layout, illumination system, etc.  The Elcan is also lighter and shorter than the S&B Short Dot plus Larue SPR-E.  You should really try one before you knock it.

When you get a Colt all the uppers are in spec. When you get an aftermarket upper the spec on the rails can be all over the place and that causes fitment issues.

I've only held the specter dr never used it. I would have possibly bought it if larue sold a mount for it. You're right FOV and eye relief are better, but nothing beats S&B glass. I have the short dot le and people are amazed how clear it is when they look through it.

And no matter how good the optic is, it's only as good as the mount that it's in. In the case of the elcan you're stuck with that crappy arms mount. I have plenty of experience with them.

I just bought an Elcan and took and sighted it in on my LWRC M6A3. Cleaned the rifle and then promptly dropped it... So when I take it out again I will be sure to report back if it is still on target.
