Need some advice... some background... I am in my 40's and started shooting benchrest competitions when I was 7 yrs old (dad started me early).  The last group I shot with my Dan Lilja bbl hunting rifle was 3/10's... I have a grip on the basics.

I got my first AR last week.  A Rock River 16"bbl (1:9) with a free float 4 rail.  I went out today with iron sights and two types of ammo,  bench rest and sand bags.  The 50 gr stuff shot about 6" and the 64 gr shot about 6" (100 yds).  I have a feeling that was as good as I can do with the type of target and sights I was using.  My mid 40's eyes are not what they used to be.

My question:  how much could I expect the groups to shrink with a 1x type of sight like the eotech?  What would be the difference if I mounted a small variable like a Leupold 1x4?

I am not looking for a target or varmint rifle... just a general purpose rifle but I would like to be able to slay the occasional Montana varmint like prarie dog, coyote, etc as well as being prepared for a possible zombie scenario.

If I do decide to go with a Leupold 1x4, how do you handle mounting with that big tall front sight out there?  Best to get a low profile block or try to put the scope up?

    Any advice appreciated.   Thanks

If you're a good shot, are you sure there's nothing wrong with the rifle?

The trigger might have something to do with it.  A stock AR trigger isn't anywhere near what you'd have in a competition bench gun.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it.  I guess for the purpose of my question assume the rifle with a machine rest would shoot one hole groups at 100.  I am asking what would happen if I removed the variable of my eyes and an iron sight that covers most of my target at 100 yds.  If I can shoot 6" with that, and I'll make a guess of 2" groups with a 4x scope, how would an eotech do with the same target?  Closer to the 6" or closer to the 2"?
I know this is unknown, just looking for experienced estimates or reports from someone who shoots with an eotech or a 1x4 scope.

I have shot 1.5-2.5" 10 shot groups with an EOTech. Depending on ammo, rifle, and what I had for breakfast.

If you have an A2 style upper, though, I wouldn't advise optics; I'd swap the upper for a flat top and mount an optic there.

If you want to see how you would shoot with a red dot type optic without breaking the bank, check these out.

Here's a good option. 0n 1x, use both eyes open for up close and dirty.

All RRA rifles will shoot at least 1.5 MOA and many are advertised at 3/4 MOA.  I would be checking to make sure your barrel is not fouled.

Some shooters have a hard time with irons but you can get good with them.  I would say with an optic you should be able to get 1.5” to 2” groups out of the AR at 100yds.  If you get match grade ammo 1" and under.

If we can be of help feel free to ask.  We stock Leupold, EoTech, and so on.

I will answer part of my own question tomorow... tonight I mounted a scope I already own (a Burris 1.5x5) on the RRA AR.  I got some 55 fmj and some 69 HPBT match.  I will take it out and see what it does.  I will post results in case anyone is interested.
Later I will mount a friends eotech on it and report those results.  That should give a good example of groups from the same gun and shooter with irons, low power scope, and eotech

I shoot 6ish inch groups with irons on my carbine. I threw a Millett DMS 1-4 on it and 2" with PMC at a quick pace is doable. I also did a trigger job.

Mounting was a set of rings on a YHM riser, but Burris and SWFA have a one piece mount that is perfectly suited for mounting without the riser.

Before age 40 I shot almost as well with irons as with a low-magnification scope.  I still have a 5 shot sub 1" group I did with my 1933 M-54 '06 and the Lyman 48.  Those were the days.  I'm 54.  Now I'd be lucky to shoot 4" with that rifle.

So the answer to your question depends entirely on how bad your eyesight has become.........is becoming.........will become (hey, you said you were in your '40s).

The good news is that dot sights are a revelation to crotchety middle-old-aged farts like me.  All of a sudden I can shoot good ammo into just over 1" at 100 with a 4 minute Aimpoint M2.  I put 5 into just under 1 MOA a few weeks ago with my 6# .308 RSI and AP 7000SC.  (Don't buy the BS.  Dot size is not the handicap most think)  I suspect a high magnification scope would shrink this a bit, but not enough to worry about on coyotes.

Small target resolution is another matter, one that has little to do with accuracy potential.  For some purposes there is no substitute for magnification - no matter how young we are.

OK shot some groups with the scope on... 25 yrd standing with an improvised/leaning rest. Shot as fast as I could and tried to get on target quick and they were all right where I wanted.  No suprise.
100 yds, bench, 5 or 10 shot groups (I read the 3 shot group thread and agree)
55 gr fmj shot at just a shade over 2-2.5"
69gr HPBT shot right at 1.5" each 5 shot group had 4 touching and one about 1-1.5 away... thought it might be me.  When I shot a 10 shot group it was pretty round and right at 1.5
I could work on trying a trigger or something but for the type of rifle I want, I am very satisfied.
When I get a chance to try the eotech I will post those results too.
