Looking for some advice on optics.

My father just received a DPMS LR308T for his 62nd b-day and wants to put a scope on it. His eyes aren't exactly what they used to be in the service, so he definately wants something with some type of variable power. There are so many options out there, and I'm not very well versed when it comes to scopes. He's looking to keep it within $300-$400 (I know that's not gonna get him much nowadays) & would be using it to hit targets approx. 200-500 yards out. Leupold? Nikon? Bushnell? Burris? I dunno.

He's currently thinking about picking up the Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x. 42mm w/ Adjustable Objective Ballistic Plex Reticle

Any advice and/or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Have him look at the Mueller TacII 3-10x44.  The glass is a step above the rest of the Mueller line.  Good luck.
