Hi all,

I'm looking to build a mid-length Armalite into a sort of "DMR" rifle. Something between CQB and Semi-Sniper roles. No I'm not a sniper or a SWAT team member but on weekends I like to pretend that 1 gallon jugs are terrorists

My question is, how "visible" is the reticle on the ACOGs without fiber optics? I have a 1.5x ACOG with the cross hair reticle and it is pretty hard to see when the fiber optic is covered/dark. The outer lines are bold enough to pick up but too thick to be "precise". I can get a TA01NSN for $850 NIB and could eliminate the cost of having to buy a BUIS as well, so it seems like a good deal, but if the reticle is too thin to see against a dark target (or at all during dusk/dawn) it's pretty pointless.

Sooo.... any input onj this optic for this role?

THANKS!

I haven't used a 1.5x ACOG but I used to have a NSN model. If your planning on using the irons on top for precise shooting, dont. There good enough for man sized targets out to 50-75y but nothing more. For what your looking for, I would replace the irons on the back with a reddot and be done. I think you can find a better price than $850tho. I got mine for $650.

ETA: I noticed you mentioned dusk. Since the tritium is a faint yellow ans only glows in the dark, for me it washed in the dark looking at a porch light, headlight or other brighter object. I couldnt even see the black crosshair, the whole thing would disappear. YMMV.

That's what i carry and it works fine. I have never used the fiber optic one so i can't really give you a compare.

Here's a picture thread, enjoy.

I find the reticule of the 01NSN to be quick and easy to find during the day and on light targets.  However at night, I find it next to useless when compared to the 31 series.  That may be because every 01NSN I have used is old, but the illum always seems too weak to me on everyone of those I have used.

I do find the 01NSN crosshair disappears on black bullseyes.
I think the 01NSN BUIS are useless.

Another note is that the 01NSN BDC only goes to 600m.  The 31 series goes out to 800.  For a DMR shooting at extended ranges, that may make a difference.

Also 850 isnt too good of a price.  Keep watching the EE and snag one for 6-700.

Looks like a no go then. Realisticly a 55 grainer out of a 16' carbine is not my first pick for long range work so I guess I'll look at the Leupold CQ/T.

I have a TA01NSN that is 7 or 8 years old; the tritium has held up well and it is a great all around scope. I love my RCO but I still use the TA on one of my colts as well and it is quick and accurate.

I had plenty of success in afg. using a 4x32 sf acog at ranges to 400 meters. It was mounted in a larue mount, 14.5" barell, using 62 gr and later 77 gr ammo. The sf acog is not illuminated. This is the version that has iron sights placed on top. Also did numerous headshots in the 100 meter range in full kit while being shot at with this setup. Never had any issues during any daytime conditions, and the reticle is more precise for 100-300 meters than the chevron versions.

I have a TA01 that has the red illumination and I think it was on the shelf for a few years before I bought it.  The red looks more orange and isn't the brightest, I havent got the chance to compare it to another one, but It its a good optic for my needs the BDC is very close with my own loads provided I zero high at a 100 yards. I can ring a 12 by 12 in. piece of steel at 500 yards on a calm day pretty easily.

I have TA01NSN, works well enough, the reticle is great for daylight, the amber tritium glow is sufficient for night time use. BUIS are nothing to write home about, but they get the job done for close quarters, which is what they were designed for. Hey, SOCOM designed the damn thing, that's good enough for me.

$850 is a good price for NIB, that's about what I paid for myne NIB.
