Hello all,
I am thinking ahead to the outfitting of my DD xv M4. Since it is a flat top with only the 1.5 rear sight, I would like to add some optics to it. I like the idea of the EOTech and the heads up display that doesn't require me to look through a round scope to do so. Price is key so here are my options: 1) Leave the DD as is and use the irons with the larger aperature for the close quarter shooting and smaller aperature for long distance. 2) Add an Eotech...if doing so, do you prefer to co-witness the back sight, remove it entirely, or do I have to get a flip up. With the DD 1.5 rear, it is fixed so there is no up or down and if left on it is cowitness or nothing. 3) Add an Aimpoint. Thoughts, ideas, priorities, etc? Thanks, New |

The DD 1.5 rear sight is still a sight...you don't NEED an optic just because you "only" have the DD 1.5. I like the idea of the EOTech and the heads up display that doesn't require me to look through a round scope to do so. Price is key so here are my options: 1) Leave the DD as is and use the irons with the larger aperature for the close quarter shooting and smaller aperature for long distance. Think of the large aperture as the "low light" aperture and the small aperture as the "daylight" aperture, rather than "close quarters" vs "long distance". Nothing wrong with this option. 2) Add an Eotech...if doing so, do you prefer to co-witness the back sight, remove it entirely, or do I have to get a flip up. With the DD 1.5 rear, it is fixed so there is no up or down and if left on it is cowitness or nothing. I'm not a fan of EOTechs over Aimpoints. After experimentation, I have mine set up with a lower-1/3 cowitness. See below. 3) Add an Aimpoint. If you want an optic on a "close quarters" rifle, meaning about <300 yards/meters, this is the way I'd go. The setup that I prefer is with an Aimpoint Micro T-1 (or H-1 if you have no need for night vision compatibility) with standard fixed front base and a Troy Folding Rear Battlesight. I use the LaRue LT-660 mount, which gives a lower-1/3 cowitness. Thoughts, ideas, priorities, etc? Thanks, New |

Irons are great
I prefer Eotechs as do many but they have a poor rep on this site with many vocal haters Aimpoints I have never liked and never found an excuse that validates them... Co witness is a personal choice I like a true co witness and prefer the eotech in AA battery N bats have problems the new 123 bat is promising |
| Yeah, get the XPS2. Having the battery perpendicular to the recoil force makes sense. No weakening of the battery contact springs and very compact. I like the Eotech because the glass has no color tint to my eyes so it seems like you're looking through nothing with both eyes open. |

Aimpoint, Eotech, whichever. I prefer Aimpoint personally. With an Eotech, you'll need a Riser to get 1/3 cowitness with the irons.
For the aimpoint, I recommend the LT-129 Cantilever mount. The best part is that for either, you can later get a LaRue Flip-to-side mount for either brand's 3x magnifier. I tried a 1-4x variable, and I found that even on 1x, I was a slave to the Scope's required eye relief, and speed suffered. |
| As stated you will get mixed reviews on the eotech vs aimpoint. I have never used an aimpoint but have looked down a few and realized they are not for me. I've had an eotech 553 with a FTS 4X Magnifier and I loved that set up but wanted to try something different so I sold that for an ACOG. The acog has super clear optics and great percision but the FOV was tuff for me (TA31F). So now I have that F/S in the EE section and I'm going to try the new XPS with the new G23 magnifier. HTH |

I have an Eotech 512 and I love it. On another note, I'm going to buy a Comp ML3 to see what all the rage is about. Can't decide on that damn dot size for the Aimpoint though. I love the fuzzy circle with the 1 MOA dot on the Eotech. Extremely nice target acquisition. For your Eotech
setup I'd go with either a YHM riser (what I have) or the Larue riser, depending on how much you wanna spend ( $35 vs $110 ). You do get the QD with the Larue which is a big plus. Buy a YHM flip (part # 9680) rear sight from brightflashlights in the industry forum. Go to the range and zero in you irons. Plop your Eotech with riser on your AR. Looking through your irons, adjust the Eotech dot so it sits just atop your front sight post. Flip the rear sight down. Fine tune your reticle out to your choice of distance (I like 100 yards). You will love this setup!! If your Eotech dies for some reason (which it won't because you'll keep the good lithium energizer batteries that you'll get from brightflashlights in your optic), with the Larue QD your irons are free and clear to use in a second... |

I agree and if you can go to a local shop and look thru an aimpoint first I would. I love how reliable the aimpoint is but just cna't get into the single dot over the eotech recticle. As stated if you sight fails your irons never will. Just my .02 |
