I recently had the chance to use some MFI scope rings and was impressed with the quality and resonable price so I thought I'd share my impressions. All MFI rings are CNC machined from T6061 aluminum alloy and then MilSpec hard coat anodized dark black. All hardware is steel, Allen screws, 1/2" hex head lock nuts and wing nuts. The fit and finish is first class. All MFI mounts depend on tension to firmly attach to the rail as there is no locking piece that interfaces with the rail cutout, only the round cross bolt that applies tension across the picitinney rail. Also included with all mount sets are inserts enabling the use of 1" tubed optics.
MFI Scope Rings A nice extra is that MFI provides both the hex head lock nuts and wing nuts. This allows you a quick tool less removal or a more secure attachment using a 1/2" socket. Since I was mounting the optics on 5.56 caliber rifles with low recoil I opted to use the wing nuts. Return to zero after removal was fine as long as I pushed the optic towards the muzzle to take out any slack in the scope mount/rail interface. The mounts never came loose after 3 days at the range firing 500 rounds through 2 different weapons. MFI doesn't waste much money on fancy packaging.
30mm standard tall rings. MFI web page I chose to use the 30mm tall rings to mount a Millet DMS1 scope and an Aimpoint on my LMT carbine. The full length top rail on the LMT MRP gave me plenty of space to gain good eye relief (NTCH) and clear the rear MFI MAD buis. The tall rings use 4 Allen screws, 2 per each side to secure the top half of the ring to the base portion of the mount.
To mount an Aimpoint on the LMT only one ring was needed. The single ring gave me an absolute co-witness placing the dot at the tip of the front sight.
30mm Heavy Duty Med Height Rings MFI web page I choose this height to mount a DMS1 and Aimpoint on my Sig556 due to the 556s lower stock height. The Med height rings use 6 Allen screws, 3 per side and are wider than the tall rings. These rings would work well on a Robinson XCR or any weapon with a lower stock The 556 is limited on rail space to the upper receiver unless you have a Samson or Troy rail system with a full length top rail. I was to lazy to mount up my Samson rail for this review so the eye relief was not optimum, to get a decent eye relief my cheek was further to the rear than I liked. Tall, Medium.
Another potential problem was clearance while using the charging handle.
The co-witness with the Aimpoint and Sig back up sights was centered with the red dot right on top of the front sight post.
MFI has a rear MAD buis that is specific to the Sig556 coming out soon. This should be a big improvement over the Sig popsicle stick rear sight. MFI 556 MAD buis 30mm Heavy Duty Cantilever Ring Mount MFI web page I've used this mount on several different ARs and it works as advertised, no complaints. Most of you are familiar with this type of mount so I won't elaborate here. I did a review on this mount awhile back but it must be archived by now because I can't find it in My Topics..
In conclusion, MFI mounts area good quality at a fair price, and Mike @ MFI is a pleasure to deal with. They guarantee your 100% satisfaction, and their products are made in the USA. Their stuff doesn't have a big name like LaRue, GG&G, etc. but for those on a budget it works. IMHO |
