I've got a flat-top upper receiver with a 16" bbl and was wondering which ACOG  would be right for my AR.
I'm looking for anything between 3x or 4x mag and I'm partial to the green chevron or horseshoe with center-dot reticles.
My front-sight is fixed A2 style, does that mean I'd have to raise the ACOG off the flat-top?

Anyone know what I want to be looking at?

Look at Trijicon they have a list of the acog models with green illumination.  Look under Products > ACOG.

Ive got the TA01NSN model and the TA31A.

The TA01NSN is the least expensive I believe while the other is several hundred more.  I like them both.  The TA31 is brighter because of the fiber optic, while the 01 model relies on yellow tritium to provide the illum in low light.  I think the green reticle is relatively new on the ACOG's, I would like to look through one for comparison with the red.

Ive shot out to 300 yards with the ACOG and Im pretty happy with them.  The front sight post wont be a problem for you.  You may also want to pick up a Larue quick release mount.

Wow, thanks for the super detailed info. I'm glad to know I won't have to trade out the front post.
Ive got the TA01NSN model and the TA31A.
- I assume you have the same length bbl and style upper I have, right?

I'll look at both models. If I get one in green, I'll let you know how I like the green reticle if you haven't tried one yet.

I personaly like the TA31F

4 power with the illuminated Chevron with BAC, also comes in green TA31F-G

Not much on the TA01 since it is not dual illuminated, but still an awsome scope...

So, if i'm leaning TA31F, what's the big deal between the green and red chevrons?

just personal preference,

The green does seem to glow a little brighter for me, some people that are red/green color blind can see green a lot better than red for some reason.

The human eye picks up green better than any other color. I think thats why green lasers are so much more visible during the day. Dont quote me on this though.

When I get an ACOG I am going with the TA31F or TA31F-G

Give us an update if you go with a green model so we know how you like it.

I'm setting aside portions of the next two paychecks for the green TA31F ... if grad school payments don't kick my ass too much.
I'll post some pics and a quickie review once I purchase, receive, and mount it.

Any ideas for a good BUIS to go along with it? The pic that Fredman posted looks like he's got a solid flip-up rear that sits under the relief of the scope.

does anybody use the chevron as a "red dot" if they're shooting both eyes open. i got a buddy with an acog, red chevron, and he says it works pretty well if you're nose to charging handle. sorry, not trying to hijack the thread. i'm also looking to get an acog.

I know this sounds crazy, but I'm colorblind and at times red seems to blend in with black. So for me a green reticle is a huge +1 for acogs. The release of the green reticle acogs was the primary reason for me ditching my TA31 ecos.

Take a look at the TA11 series ACOGs as well. They are a little heavier than the TA31 series, and the field of view is somewhat smaller, but it has much better eye relief. I love the TA31F, but you gotta be right up to the darn thing to use it. Not trying to sway your opinion, just make sure you look at all your options before buying. I just did my research as well and went with the TA11H, love the horseshoe!

So wait, what's so much cooler about the RCO?
It looks like all it adds is the flashkiller, some schnazzier scope coat, and the thumbscrews on the right side of the mount.
Other than, same basic TA31, right?

TA31F: I'm convinced this is the right ACOG for me.  I don' t like the green chevron, as I figure i'm much more likely to be shooting towards a green background (foliage)  than a red background.  What I'm trying to say is in most cases, the red chevron will provide more contrast.

My local gun shop has a TA31FG in stock and I took a look at it and I really like it. The green chevron is awsome and very visible. This thing looks better in person than on the internet.

How much did they want for it at your local store?
I'm now considering the TA11H. It looks like the green reticle releases have driven down prices on the red ones.
For me, I really think it's between the TA11H and TA31F-G at this point.
All I have to do is sweat it out for a few weeks and then just pick one (although if Triji made a green horseshoe TA11 with horiz. markers I'd just get that without thinking about it).

For you military folks, you can get the ACOG through www.aafes.com.  I used a 15% off coupon to get my TA31F for ~$935, no tax and free shipping.  They also have the TA01NSN for $999 no tax and free shipping.

This was my 1st ACOG and I love this SOB. I also have other high-end scopes within the Leupold and NightForce company. I also have several red dots and mrds, and this ACOG is sweet.

Edit to add pic of the TA31RCO-M4CP on a new free-float Colt M4, also ACOG is next to a NightForce 8-32-56 scope.

Depends what you want it for. The TA31 series are great, I loved the one I had in the army, but the eye relief is enough for me to suck up the little more weight and little less FOV on the TA11 series for my own weapon. When I did research, I found almost all 3 gun shooters use the TA11 if they have an ACOG. Had more than one person tell me (and some on these boards), that the TA11 is just easier to shoot while runnin around and in slightly awkward postions. I tried it out myself and found the difference in that category to be significant.

If you do decide on the TA11, you can get the green donut reticle if you like that style. I went with the horseshoe, and I love it so far. Somewhat hard to find though. I got mine off an eBay optics dealer for $1070.

So, went to the gun store in Rockville today and saw some ACOGs in 4x32. Either my eyes are broken or the reticles were funky. The fellow at the store said that there were no specialty reticles, just plain old crosshairs that were tritium-illuminated. I could barely see the things. It was black in the light and sort of bright (barely) when he covered it with his hand. Too bad they didn't have any with chevrons or horseshoes, but it sure didn't make me an ACOG believer to check these two sights out at my local store. Does anyone have any photos of their chevron or horseshoe reticles, I'll settle for red but would prefer green, and I'm sort of leaning TA11H over TA31F-G, but it's still  basically a coin-flip between the two. Thanks in advance!

Just browse through the reticule pic thread that's stickied at the top of this forum. There's a pic of the 31H reticule here at the very bottom.

I'm a fan of the TA31F.

I am considering getting a green reticle installed in this one, although to be honest I'm plenty satisfied with the red.

rakkasan1187: Thanks for probably one of the most helpful replies I've gotten from arfcom. Real world experience and third-party reviews. A+

Shalashaska: Yeah, I breezed through the reticle pic thread a while ago. Too few folks with green reticles and cameras, I guess.

Zack3g: You can get the reticle switched out ex post facto? How much does that run you?

To everyone in general: I was checking out some ACOGs at my local store (they only had standard crosshair ones - lame) and I've come to realize that I'll need to spend a lot of time building up the disposable income reserves to blow on a sight. In the meantime, though, I'm looking to pick up a decent BUIS. I've mostly been digging the Troy Industries flip-up (I like the no-springs approach). Would the Troy flip-up BUIS fit under either of the ACOGs I want (TA31 series or TA11 series)?

Thanks in advance. I'm fairly new to the optics board, and you guys are the most responsive and most helpful lot on arfcom that I've encountered.

The Troy will fit under any of the 3.5 or 4X ACOGs.
My personal favorite ACOG for a 16" AR is the TA11C.
Donut, red of course, and the calibration matches 75/77gr ammo almost perfectly out to 800 meters.
BAC works very well for me, and the TA11C is the best all around ACOG for my use.

Kreiger barreled 16" Recon with OPS 12th firing 75/77gr ammo with a TROY rear BUIS.
This, and the Leica Geovid 10X42 rangefinding binoculars is my favorite kit.

Ditto that. Make sure you compare the TA11 with the TA31. I was all set for the 31 but when I tried it next to the 11, it was waaaayyy easier to get a fast sight picture with the TA11.

Yeah, I've actually checked out a couple and I'm leaning heavily on the TA11 side of the fence.
I've asked this before, but now that you guys have shown me a bunch of pics, I'm concerned again: will my A2 fixed front sight obscure the ACOG sight picture at all? I've been told no, but most of these photos show ARs with flip-up front sights.

I am looking to get another "11" for a 12.5" 6.8.  It seems as though the .308 calibration will be closer than the .223; thoughts?

I don't have any info on the 6.8 ballistics, but I'm sure the .308 would be closer than the 5.56.

Message me some ballistic data and we'll try to plug it all in.

Decided on the TA11H after fondling it at a local store. I will probably not throw money down 'til the end of August though as a gift to myself for my b-day slash wrapping up another semester of grad school, but as soon as I have it in hand, I'll post pics of my first build with the ACOG on it.

Thanks, everyone, for all the really helpful input. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you guys on the Optics board really know your stuff!
