I need the assistance of the experts here in the Optics Forum.  I have built a DMR clone consisting of the following:

Kaiser Defense lower
Stag LPK
Geissele DMR trigger
A2 stock
LaRue Stealth upper
LaRue 12" handguard
WOA DMR barrel (Ion bonded)
Surefire MB556K brake
Harris bipod

I am intending this gun to be a bench gun with a max range of 600 yards.  I may do the occasional long range coyote shot with it as well.  I plan on shooting BH 69gr and 77gr rounds and doing some handloads as well.  In reviewing my optics choices, I have settled on the Nightforce 3.5-15x50 with the zero stop.  The scope will be in a LaRue mount.  This particular scope has a choice between Mil-Dot and NP-R1 reticles.  Considering my intended use, which would be the better reticle?

TIA.

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of your rifles intended use. I've got a Nightforce 5.5-22x40 with the MLR/Z-Stop. If I were in your shoes, I think I'd stick with the NP-R1. It'll give you some handy hold references for those coyote shots.

Just my two cents.

Are you a mil dot kind of guy?

I never did get used to using mil dots so the reticles that are calibrated in MOA are much easier for me to range with. I had an NP-R2 on my 2.5X10 and loved it for everything except shooting at grid targets as I would sometimes lose the reticle among the grid.

I don't have any experience with ranging, so I don't have a Mil Dot preference over anything else at this point.  My previous experience with scopes has been limited to the standard cross hair type and variations thereof.  Ranging is something I would like to learn and in reading the NF literature, it looks like the NP-R1 may have a shorter learning curve.
