I'm very new to the AR world and EOTech.  I just purchased a new Smith & Wesson M&P15 with iron sights.  I'm 54, wear bifocals, and think I need optics.  I want to plink targets at 50-100 yards and use for home defense.  Any suggestions?  What about EOTech?  Where are some good places to buy optics, I don't want to get ripped off.  Any help will be appreciated.

I'm the same age. I use both the Eotech and Aimpoint for under 100 yards. Try www.eguns.com for the best price. Chad is a real good guy.

WTG, I'm working with a similar rig.  I also wear bifocals and am in your age group.  I worked with the iron sights on my AR15 for three or four months, using an aperture on my aiming eye to increase the depth-of-field so the rear sight, front sight and target were in reasonable focus.  After getting tired of alligning all of the apertures, I got an Eotech 512.  With my bifocals alone, I now have the target in sharp focus with the 1 MOA dot overlaid on it.   You can also shoot with both eyes open for close-quarters activity.

The main consideration with the Eotech is that it provides no magnification.  I can put 10 rounds of 55 grain .223 into a 2-inch circle at 50 yards, off a sandbag.  Go to 100 yards and that target almost disappears in the distance.  I can get onto a paper plate at that distance with this completely stock rifle.  A lot of shooters here expect sub-MOA accuracy at those distances.

For distances beyond 50 yards, I'm considering a 3-9 x 40 scope on a quick disconnect mount.  The Eotech will serve its intended purpose for general shooting and home defense purposes.

Thanks for taking time to answer my post.

I guess I agree with the other guys.  I have an Aimpoint and an EOTech.  Either will be just about perfect for those applications but the EOTech gets the nod from me.  It is significantly less expensive than an Aimpoint.

Whatever you get, get one that uses AA or other commonly available battery type.  The N-cell batteries used by many of the Aimpoints are going to be more difficult to find.

SWFA is the largest internet optics dealer and usually has good prices.  They have a store south of Dallas also.

I purchased one from him last week and it works great. Can't beat the price (even with having to pay tax for living in the same state). Good luck with your search.
