Hello, I'm new to the forum and I have a question. I've seen some setups here and other places where a reflex sight is mounted on top of a scope or other sight. I was wondering what the purpose would be? Is the Reflex Sight strictly used for very close shooting? Would this even be effective at longer distances?
Does what I'm trying to say even make sense?

TIA!

Billy

BTW: I've ordered my first AR and am waiting for it to arrive and I'm trying to figure out what exactly I want to do.

Yes, basically holo sights like EOTech, Aimtech, and whatever others you can find are for relatively close range shooting. Red dots, holographics, and those kinds usually consist of a 2-4 MOA dot that really is only effective to 50-100 yards. After that, you'll need a scope or Trijicon ACOG for fairly precise shooting.
If I were you, I would figure out what you would be using the AR most for, and then put appropriate optics on it. I personally have both a 3-10x scope and a red dot for close and long range. I used a 45 degree angle mount to place the red dot close to the barrel, but out of the way of the scope.\/ \/ \/ \/ \/

Thanks for the reply!

I like the sideways mount.Hadn't seen that.

My question though is on a setup like yours. If I were to mount a reflex sight on top of the scope, would the height of the sight affect the trajectory? Once it was sighted in would it still work at 100 yds or only very close like 10-25 yds.

If you mount the dot sight above the scope, then you will have to adjust for additional height.  Let's take bullet trajectory out of the equation for a moment, and assume the bullet will fly straight.

If you ZERO the sight at 50 yards, you will be high by a few inches before 50 yards, and low by a few inches after 50 yards.
