I have an M&P 15 OR.  I bought an eotech 512.  Can I just mount the optic on the top rail or do I need some kind of riser?  Sorry if this is a stupid question.  I currently just have it on the upper rail, but want to make sure that is right before going to the range.

You can mount it right on the flap top rail and its fine.
If you prefer a riser you can use that too.
I have one on a Bushmaster ORC and it works great.

Directly on the rail gives absolute co-witness - the reticle and iron sights will line up in the center of the Holosight.  Using a riser gives lower 1/3 co-witness - they all line up in the bottom 1/3 of the Holosight.

A QR riser gives the option of popping the optic on and off quickly, though you could also use the GG&G Accucam lever to get the same effect with no riser.

And since you have an OR, you don't need to worry about the front sight getting in the way of your 512.  Mount it there and be happy.  If you decide on getting a BUIS set, then you can start sweating the absolute/ lower 1/3 cowitness deal.
