I purchased a Colt AR15 A2 (obviously with the A2 iron sights) and was wondering what options i have for mounting a red dot sight on top of the carrying handle. I'm COMPLETELY NEW to the AR 15 and know basically nothing.
Thx.

I know that at least with ACOGs, they have mounts for both flat tops and carrying handles.  I have no doubt you could also get a carrying handle 30mm mount for an Aimpoint.  In addition to my current M4 flattop, I also have the AR15-A2 and CAR-15A2.  I went the scope route with the A2, and my issue with the handle mounted scope was that the scope was so high in relation to the bore. At closer ranges, I had to do some serious compensation for the lower POI.

My opinion would be to get a gooseneck mount, that connects to your carrying handle, and would actually mount the red dot over the front hand guards.  I have seen this set up several times in one or more of the various tacked photo threads.  It might make your AR a little front heavy, but would provide a mount more in line with your bore and iron sights.

Colt had or has a scout mount with a C-MORE red dot that works well on my A -1 carry handle .If Colt Optics does'nt have it anymore try the C-MORE web site.
